Director of European Affairs ASTM International

ASTM International – a worldwide leader in the development of technical standards and information that advance global commerce, innovation, and product quality - is seeking a Director of European Affairs to be based in Brussels.

Scope of Work:

The successful candidate will interact extensively with ASTM International’s global government affairs and industry outreach team to establish its new Brussels office and develop and implement public affairs initiatives and strategies in Europe.

Duties will involve direct interaction and outreach with representatives of European governmental institutions, trade federations, non-governmental organizations, and others on high-level issues involving product and consumer safety, standards and competitiveness, transportation and energy, environment and sustainability, and market integration. The successful candidate will also develop strategic analysis and briefing materials for the organization and forge collaborative relationships that advance the mission and objectives of ASTM International

Requisite Skills, Experience and Education:

The successful candidate will have broad familiarity with international politics, the workings of European political and regulatory institutions, single-market integration issues; emerging transatlantic trade and economic cooperation issues; and a demonstrated interest in technical standards and regulatory affairs.

A university degree (advanced degree preferred) and strong writing/communications skills are required, as are strong analytical skills, an ability to communicate complex issues to decision makers and general audiences, and the ability to be entrepreneurial and strategic in carrying out responsibilities. Proficiency in English is a must (proficiency in another official language of Europe is preferred).

A minimum of 5 – 10 years in relevant legal, policy, international relations or public affairs positions with increasing levels of responsibility.
