Early Childhood Development Advisor, Thailand

A volunteer placement is currently open in Thailand.

This placement is part of the VSO’s education programme to increase access and improve the quality of the early childhood development care, for migrant/Thai children in four provinces with high number of children population. The migrants come from the neighbouring Cambodia, Laos, and Burma.

What does the role involve?

You will be working with the staff of the Education Promotion team of the foundation in supporting schools and communities with the early childhood development initiatives. Specifically, your role and responsibilities will be:

  • Conducting needs assessments in a cluster of schools

  • Providing training and coaching for teachers and key staff, improving classroom activity and educational materials

  • Raising awareness in the community about early childhood development and how to access services

  • Supporting the community to develop an appropriate community-based early childhood development programme

  • Monitoring progress and evaluation

  • Liaising between migrant and Thai schools as well as between migrant and Thai communities.

Skills, qualifications and experience required

You will need at least a bachelor degree in Early Childhood Care and Education with 3 years working experience in the early education or pre-primary education. You have to be skilled in delivering training, desirably with experience training low skilled or untrained teachers or carers. Knowledge of organising a community awareness raising activities and working with parents will be an advantage. Communication skill is vital for this role. You’ll need to be able to build relationship with a variety of stakeholders at different level, have an open attitude and sensitivity to a different culture. It is also important that you are willing or confident to learn the local language (or at least pick up the basics) to be able to work well with the communities.

And the rest...

You will be based in Bangkok the capital city, with frequent travels to neighbouring districts. There is currently a VSO volunteer working with Foundation for Rural Youth until March 2013. VSO programme office is also based in Bangkok. Other volunteers are mainly based in Mae Sot sub-district which is 8 hours bus trip away from Bangkok.
We’ll ask you to commit 24 months to make a sustainable contribution to development goals and in return we’ll provide you with invaluable training before your placement, a local living allowance, return flights, accommodation and insurance. When you return to your home country we’ll help you resettle and we’ll invite you to stay involved with us.
