Butterfly Works is looking for an: Education Designer

Butterfly Works is a social design and co-creation studio in Amsterdam. We work directly with local communities in developing countries and have two departments. Our Design & Branding team co-creates inspiring products and concepts and accesses global markets and trade networks to establish successful brands. Our Social Campaigns & Learning team works with local communities to create innovative learning programmes and social awareness campaigns, while creatively using new media as an educational tool.

Co-creation is a philosophical and political approach to actively solving global issues. It builds on participation in the planning and creating process. Co-creation assumes that users are experts in their own domain, and thus best positioned to find real and lasting solutions.

Butterfly Works has a core team of 10 designers and organisers and countless co-creators across 22 countries.

Job description:

We are looking for an Education Designer. As an Education designer you will work on various projects developing interactive lesson materials using new media for youth in developing countries. All our programs are co-created with our local partners using a Design Thinking approach and are based on a number of learning theories which increase effectiveness and impact. You will be part of our Social Campaigns & Learning team and will work closely together with our Senior Education designer. These will be your main tasks:

- Develop educational materials.

- Conduct research: context, educational and technical.

- Prepare and facilitate co-creation workshops.

- Conduct the trainer sessions.

- Supervise co-authors and designers of educational materials.

- Assist in the design and development of new concepts for the Learning department.

- Contribute to the strategy of the Learning department from your expertise regarding educational material.

- Stay up-to-date with innovations in the field of education, development aid, mobile learning, e-learning and distance learning.

- Maintain and develop the network of external suppliers' services and expertise.

Profile:

We are looking for an enthusiastic colleague who is used to working independently and taking responsibility for his/her work. You feel at home in a dynamic international working environment. You are thorough and accurate, but with a good sense of priorities. You have a hands-on work style so you are able to apply theory to practice easily. You enjoy facilitating workshops and training sessions and have proven skills in developing, structuring and writing user-friendly lesson plans and activities. You are able to work from a distance with different international partners guiding them in the development of new lesson material. You are able to visualise your ideas. You have good knowledge of new and old media and technologies, and you can come up with different ways to apply them in our projects.

Qualifications and knowledge:

- A bachelor’s degree in a relevant area of education design or the broader field of education.

- At least three years of experience in the development of curricula and student centred, participatory learning experiences incorporating e-learning and associated technologies.

- Knowledge of new and old technologies and methods within the field of new media and education.

- Knowledge of design.

- Excellent knowledge of Dutch and English, both spoken and written.

- Knowledge of French is a plus.
