Exploration Geologist AngloGold Ashanti

AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) is the world's third largest gold producer with 20 operations in 10 countries on four continents. AGA employs over 62,000 people globally. In Australia, AGA operates the Sunrise Dam Gold Mine and is developing the Tropicana Gold Mine in which it has a 70% interest and is manager. Independence Group NL holds the remaining 30%. The Sunrise Dam and Tropicana operations are both situated in WA.

Tropicana represents the most significant Australian gold discovery of the last decade. The new, large scale open pit gold mining operation will produce 3.45 million ounces over a 10 year mine life (approved project). Construction began in 2011 and first gold is anticipated in the December quarter of 2013.

We are now seeking an Exploration Geologist to join our Tropicana Exploration team at the Tropicana Gold Mine. Recent Graduates will be considered.

Accountable to the Exploration Manager this role will assist in designing and implementing drilling programmes seeking extensions to the current Tropicana resource of 6.5 million ounces. The role is FIFO on mixed roster based on 8/6 from Perth on site and 5/2 in Perth doing project work and core logging.

The main tasks of the role include but are not limited to:

• Develop work packages for drilling programs and other exploration activities.
• Assist in coordinating drilling and exploration work programs and monitor their execution.
• Carry out logging of drill samples and maintain a field interpretation of the results to guide modifications that may be required to hole depths and locations.
• Work with the Mine Exploration Coordinator, or Leading Hand Technicians, to prioritise the work assignment to technicians so that the exploration priorities are achieved
• Monitor performance (HSE&C, productivity, cost) of contractors performing exploration work.
• Contribute to reporting requirements of the Department

The ideal candidate will possess:

• Tertiary qualifications in geological science, with honours or higher level qualifications advantageous
• Experience in gold exploration, including sampling techniques, the regolith environment, drilling, and geophysical tools would be well regarded.
• Effective written and oral communication.
• Computer literacy, including MS Office, GIS (MapInfo), mining packages (Micromine, Vulcan, DataMine).
• WA drivers licence (car), competent off-road 4WD operation
• First aid certificate
