Global Intern Program--Carnegie-Tsinghua Center

The Carnegie-Tsinghua Center for Global Policy is seeking highly qualified and motivated students to apply for its academic year-long Global Intern program. Selected interns will have the opportunity to work on key foreign policy issues, to interact with senior Chinese and international scholars and experts, and to become an integral part of a growing global network of Carnegie centers, which has offices in Washington D.C., Moscow, Beirut, Beijing, and Brussels.

General requirements for all Global Interns:

•Serve as an intern from at least September 2012 – June 2013
•Be able to contribute 20hrs/week to the Center
•Be enrolled in a college or university or a recent graduate
•Have a background in International Relations or a desire to work in the field
•Submit an application no later than 12:00pm EST August 31st, 2012

The application process is extremely competitive. Individuals should have a keen interest in international affairs and international security. Applicants should have near-native English writing skills; equivalent level knowledge of Chinese is an asset. Applications will be judged on past academic performance, relevant academic study and/or work experience, grades, and recommendations. Personal interviews may be conducted.

For full consideration, all candidates must upload a resume, cover letter and two writing samples. The two writing samples must be contained in a single attachment following these guidelines:
-One sample no longer than 600 words, written within the last six months on an international relations topic.
-One paragraph no longer than 100 words summarizing a previous writing sample.

Attached writing samples may be written in Chinese or English, but candidates must enter all other application form data in English.

Interns will be unpaid. Housing and costs of living, travel costs and medical insurance connected with the internship program must be borne by interns or by other institutions and organizations. Interns are responsible for arranging their own travel to Beijing and accommodation.

Candidates can choose to intern on one of the following teams:

•Marketing & Media
•Operations & Development
•Website & Events
•Program & Research

Marketing & Media Team

Successful candidates for the Marketing & Media team should have a positive attitude, strong attention to detail and high sense of responsibility. Candidates should have sound computer literacy and a basic knowledge in graphic and web design, Web 2.0, Social media and HTML. Candidates should have superior writing and translation ability in both English and Chinese and a basic understanding of international relations. Candidates should have experience or interest in working with journalism and media agencies. Successful applicants should be highly organized and able to work independently or in team settings and be able to meet deadlines.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
•Conduct media outreach and respond to press inquiries.
•Oversee the center’s overall image locally and globally, facilitating the publication process of scholars’ research, writings etc.
•Oversee the centers contact database system to include maintaining, updating, and importing new contacts
•Create and maintain branding materials and other visual aids to include podium banners, publication covers and layouts, event backdrops and posters, gifts and video productions
•Produce templates for the center’s letterhead, fax, covers, PowerPoint briefings, e-newsletter, and event announcements and invitations
•Manage the inventory and library of all the Center's publications and other materials
•Maintain effective communication between the Center’s leadership, the scholars, intern teams, and external organizations
•Negotiate with local venders to produce procurement when needed
•Provide event management, including inviting speakers and guests etc.

Operations & Development Team

Successful candidates should have an entrepreneurial spirit with an interest in international relations and/or organizational management. Candidates should have strong interpersonal skills and be adept to actualizing strategic planning. An ability to work outside of your comfort zone and bridge cultural gaps is a must. Strong writing skills, attention to detail, and punctuality are preferred.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
•Assist in standardizing workflows to meet the Center’s needs and growth
•Develop metrics for measuring the Center’s efficiency and output
•Provide management support for the global intern and professional development programs
•Organize and execute morale-boosting and team-building activities
•Assist in strategic planning based upon Center specific and Carnegie network goals and objectives
•Compile and maintain a database of international and local donor organizations
•Draft concept notes and project proposals for funding opportunities
•Develop the Center’s alumni network
•Oversee office space management and maintenance, including all related IT
•Maintain daily financials including accounting and expense reimbursement
•Provide support for all aspects of the Carnegie-Tsingua US-China Trust Initiative

Website & Events Team

Successful candidates for the Website & Events Team will have strong attention to detail and a demonstrated interest in all functions of this key communications position. Superior writing skills and a strong comprehension of the English and/or Chinese language are required. Candidates should have a basic understanding of international relations and an understanding of current events in order to properly draft materials needed. Applicants should have superior cross-cultural skills and be able to work efficiently in teams or on individual projects. Knowledge of Dreamweaver, content management systems and HTML are desirable but not required. Previous experience in Chinese social media such as Weibo, Renren, blogs, and forums is highly desirable but not required.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
•Define events by determining the topic and identifying speakers, venues, catering options etc.
•Provide onsite event logistics, support, and management
•Serve as contact for event participants including scholars, professionals, and government officials
•Synthesizing complex and nuanced dialogue discussion into concise event summaries for publication and dissemination
•Assist with uploading of website content
•Translate text from Chinese to English and from English to Chinese
•Draft other documents including flyers, pamphlets, posters, invitations, agendas, and publications
•Coordinate materials for events such as press releases and announcements across various media platforms
•Record events though the use of photography and audio video
•Work with other Global Intern teams to meet deadlines and deliver quality written documents
•Prepare event invitations and newsletters using Dreamweaver software

Program & Research Team

Successful candidates for the Program & Research Assistant Team will have strong attention to detail and be able to work independently. Program & Research Assistants should have knowledge of their assigned scholars’ field of expertise and have a strong interest in conducting research in that field. The assistant should have superior communication and organizational skills as well as research experience.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
•Serve as a liaison between assigned scholar and the various intern teams
•Update the online calendars on their scholar's events and publications
•Work closely with scholars and the intern teams to plan and organize their scholar’s events
•Conduct research as directed by their assigned scholar
•Assist their assigned scholar in producing articles, reports, and other publications
•Collect and update the media coverage of the assigned scholar to the center regularly
•Provide logistical and content support for scholars' visit to Carnegie global centers.
•Manage the Carnegie-Tsinghua Center library
