Head of Transformational Strategy 3 Sound Land Planning and Conservation

The Living Amazon Iniative-LAI is looking for a Head of Transformational Strategy 3 Sound Land Planning and Conservation, and focus person for Policy who will work to promote solutions to achieve the best possible conservation and sustainable development to the Amazon needs, focusing particularly in land use, planning, conservation measures, as well as land tenure and priority landscapes, and collaborates with other elements of LAI to integrated solutions related to the overall LAI Strategy, including in the quality of the management of related initiatives. Also, will coordinate directly and indirectly a remote group of experts dealing with closely related issues to the Amazon needs and solutions.

Location:

Negotiable - Any WWF Office related directly to the Amazon*.

Main responsibilities:

  • Implement the TS#3 SLPC for the LAI within agreed timetables and budgets.
  • Develop plans and annual workplans for the SLPC and Policy-related activities, monitor compliance and provide support and guidance to ensure objectives are met.
  • Carry out any necessary stakeholders’ and other analyses for key issues under SLPC and Policy in order to define WWF’s role and key partnerships more clearly.
  • Identify and build partnerships with individuals, groups and organizations that are relevant to the SLPC and Policy at the regional level (or pertinent ones located outside of the region) to build shared agendas that advance the objectives of the LAI Strategy.
  • Set up the Living Amazon (“extended”) SLPC and Policy Teams, with key staff across the (WWF) Network that are working on or supporting projects and programs related to this TS and Policy.
  • Leverage expertise within the Network to advance implementation of the TS and Policy-related actions.
  • Work with the POs, and NO of the region to integrate into their strategic planning fundamental aspects of the SLPC and Policy.
  • Develop ideas, concepts and project proposals and proceed with the necessary contacts to fundraise for SLPC, Policy and LAI in general.
  • Identify actions that can be advanced jointly with the other TSs/CCs and components for maximum leverage and impact.
  • With the LAI Leader, assess the overlap (thematic and geographic) between current WWF investments and the proposed the SLPC and Policy and related actions, and, based on the results, decide what investments should be built on versus phased out.


What you need:

Required Qualifications

  • Broad geographical and thematic visions, capacity to understand problems, threats and drivers, as well as strategic and transformational solutions and to promote them and put them in motion.
  • At least 10 years professional experience in conservation and sustainable development projects –including land use planning, conservation measures, and similar–, with demonstrated success in managing multi-disciplinary teams, networking from the distance, technical capacity building and team leadership.
  • At least 5 years professional experience in a leadership role, with demonstrated success in management of projects and programmes, including managing multi-disciplinary teams and multiple donor budgets.
  • Technical proficiency in the field of conservation, natural-resource management and sustainable and international development.
  • Advanced degree in planning, policy, conservation, natural sciences, social sciences, sustainable and international development or relevant related fields; familiarity with GIS, strong analytical capabilities necessary.
Required Skills

  • Excellent communications and interpersonal relationship, verbal and writing skills.
  • Excellent command of English (1st) –indispensable–, as well as Spanish (2nd) or Portuguese (3rd) – preferably both.
  • Expertise to deal with policy issues at the international and national levels.
  • Excellent knowledge of the Amazon region and of issues and contexts related to the Living Amazon Initiative.
  • Excellent ability to interface between WWF staff, decision makers, and donors.
  • Proven success and capacity in networking and success in leading multi-country and global teams.
  • Proven experience of working with different cultures and institutions.
  • Ability to work effectively in and through matrix organizations.
  • Experience in raising and mobilizing funding.
  • Strong skills at developing partnerships learned in either NGO, governmental, or business environments.
