University of The Witwatersrand -Faculty of Engineering & the Built Environment

The University is seeking to appoint a new head of the School of Architecture and Planning. The School's core activities are to provide an excellent learning environment towards accredited professional degrees in architecture and in planning, and towards qualification in related fields of housing, urban studies, urban design, sustainable and energy efficient cities, and to conduct high quality research in these fields. The location in the heart of metropolitan Johannesburg gives students and researchers an "urban laboratory" for exploration and innovation.

The duties of the Head of School fall in the areas of academic and research leadership, student affairs, human resource management and administration. Applicants should provide evidence of significant scholarly and professional achievements with a national and international profile in her/his field. Applicants must have a doctoral degree or an equivalent professional standing in their profession. Proven management skills are necessary.

The new Head will be required to understand and co-ordinate the academic and professional visions of the constituent disciplines; lead and manage the school in meeting the strategic goals of the School, Faculty and University; maintain the national and international accreditation of its programmes; enable the multidisciplinary programmes to function in integrated ways; develop partnerships and secure external support for new and special projects.

The appointment will commence as early as possible in 2013. The standard period of office is 5 years after which the candidate may seek another term of 5 years or be integrated into an ongoing position in the School.
