Mali Health Organizing Project

The Health Savings Coordinator will work on site at Mali Health’s office in Bamako, Mali. The coordinator will be responsible for developing, piloting and evaluating a new initiative to encourage savings for health care among women enrolled in Mali Health’s existing Action for Health program, which offers free medical care to children and pregnant women. The Coordinator will design a program to allow small groups of these women to save for health emergencies and related expenses. The Health Savings program will increase the self-efficacy and capacity of women to find solutions as a group, and increase financial independence of poor households, emphasizing ability to meet basic health needs and catastrophic expenses that impair long term financial stability. The coordinator will conduct research on health savings programs in Mali and West Africa, propose, implement, and supervise a pilot program model based on existing best practices over a 4-6 month period, conduct a rigorous evaluation of the pilot to offer suggestions for roll-out, and train and transition local staff to operate the program.

Responsibilities:

Research and Pilot
•Collaborate with US-based research assistants, non-profits and community partners to determine best practices in promoting savings for health.
•Design a pilot health-savings program with women from Mali Health’s Action for Health program.
•Implement and monitor a pilot project for 50-150 women in the Sikoro neighborhood.
•Develop evaluation protocols, conduct an evaluation of the pilot program, and offer revisions to program model.
•Develop financial education modules.

Program expansion
•Participate in the recruitment and training of a permanent Health Savings Coordinator.
•Develop simple-to-use financial tracking tools for the program coordinator and participants.
•Develop evaluation and monitoring tools for the program coordinator.

Qualifications:
•Ability to self-direct, manage shifting priorities and competing demands in a challenging work environment.
•Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a related field (African studies, international development, economics, public health)
•At least one year of experience in project development, preferably in an international setting.
•Experience in microfinance, microcredit, or other international poverty alleviation models a plus
•Familiarity with participatory methods, community engagement, and community organizing.
•Fluency in French.
•Minimum 9-month commitment, with the possibility to extend
•Initiative, adaptability, vigor, persistence and passion for Mali Health’s mission.
•Previous experience in West Africa is a plus.
•Ability to live and work in difficult conditions.
