Chief Economic Adviser, CMA

The Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills wishes to appoint a Chief Economic Adviser along with four other senior executives to the new Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).
The CMA will be established in October 2013 and will become fully functioning in April 2014. This is a rare opportunity to join a new organisation at an early stage, and to play a key role in its creation.
The CMA will bring together the Competition Commission with the competition and certain consumer functions of the Office of Fair Trading. The CMA will be responsible for promoting effective competition in markets across the UK economy and have a crucial and complementary consumer protection role. It will provide an essential service to business and consumers, operating with flexibility, speed and transparency.
The Chief Economic Adviser will be the Head of Profession for economics in the CMA, providing strong, visible leadership across the organisation. You will ensure that the CMA’s economists provide high-quality advice, giving guidance on the most complex cases and developing centres of expertise. As a member of the Senior Executive Team and a key adviser to the Board, you will also play an important role in the development of the new organisation.
We are looking for a practicing economist with impressive academic and professional credentials. You will have a sound working knowledge of competition and regulatory economics, and will be able to communicate complex economic issues to non-expert audiences as well as managing complex stakeholder relationships.
