Director, Global Strategic Partnerships

BACKGROUND
IUCN is continuously expanding and improving fundraising and donor relations efforts to secure a diversified and flexible funding base that provides sustainable income to deliver IUCN’s mission and vision. The Director of IUCN’s Global Strategic Partnerships Unit is a new position in IUCN, established with the purpose of leading this effort. 
The Director, based at IUCN’s Headquarters in Gland, Switzerland, reports to the Director General and is a member of the Senior Management team. S/he is expected to work closely with IUCN’s senior management to coordinate the Union’s overall fundraising efforts and develop, update and implement strategic fundraising initiatives.
S/he leads and manages the Strategic Partnership Unit staff, bringing together expertise in public and private sector funding, philanthropy, marketing and events organization. S/he works closely with IUCN’s technical staff in Headquarters and in IUCN offices located in other parts of the world, including, in particular, IUCN’s offices in Brussels and Washington DC. 
The successful candidate will have an established track record as a fundraiser, and strategic partnership developer with an understanding of the programmatic focus of IUCN in fulfilling its vision of ‘a just world that values and conserves nature’. S/he will have proven communications, team-building and managerial skills.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Director, Global Strategic Partnerships, has the overall responsibility for leading IUCN’s efforts to expand and diversify IUCN’s funding sources in support of IUCN’s global Programme approved by the Union’s Members at the World Conservation Congresses. The Director will also manage the Strategic Partnership team and collaborate closely with other members of IUCN’s Secretariat, IUCN’s Council, IUCN Members and expert Commissions. 
The incumbent will be expected to be a highly visible driver of fundraising and donor relations within IUCN. In addition s/he will:
• Lead the development and oversee the implementation of an effective and innovative fundraising strategy that supports IUCN’s Programme and institutional priorities;
• Lead and develop IUCN’s engagement with bilateral, multilateral, private and public sector donors and partners; foundations and high net worth individuals;
• Develop a corporate sponsorship strategy;
• Lead IUCN’s online donation strategy and fundraising through social media;
• Coordinate IUCN’s communications to donors;
• Expand and manage relationships to deliver results against agreed outcomes; and
• Represent IUCN in external events of relevance to fundraising.

The Director will also be expected to:

• Demonstrate a thorough engagement with IUCN's mission and tailor messages to fit various donor requirements and interests;
• Work closely with the IUCN Council and its Finance and Audit Committee on fundraising matters;
• Engage on a regular basis with all staff involved in fundraising throughout IUCN’s Secretariat around the world;
• Monitor the results of fundraising strategies and make adjustments as needed;
• Lead and manage the building of fundraising capacities of the Secretariat, and if appropriate, the Commissions and Members (through training tools, workshops, etc);
• Keep abreast of and provide advice on fundraising trends, priorities and opportunities;
• Continue to develop IUCN’s engagement with IUCN Patrons of Nature and Goodwill Ambassadors;
• Collaborate with IUCN’s communications team to ensure that the messages about the Union are consistent and contribute to raising IUCN’s visibility and fundraising efforts, and
• Provide leadership and manage the Strategic Partnerships Unit
REQUIREMENTS
• University level education or equivalent;  
• 10-15 years of professional experience in fundraising at the international level for large organizations;  
• Familiarity with a multi-cultural donor environment;  
• A clear understanding of issues pertaining to conservation and sustainable development policy related matters;  
• Ability to work effectively within a large decentralized workforce of professionals of different nationalities and to mobilize it for common goals;  
• Leadership, management and interpersonal skills with ability to motivate others;  
• Ability to operate effectively, with tact and diplomacy, in a multi-cultural, interdisciplinary environment;  
• Strong outcome-based orientation and skills;  
• Fluency in spoken and written English and knowledge of other IUCN official languages (French and Spanish) and/or other global languages an asset;
• Adequate knowledge and skills in the use of relevant computer software
• Willingness to travel.  
SALARY

The gross annual salary for this position is in the range from CHF 156'600 to CHF 172'600, subject to deductions for social security contributions and second-pillar pension, and before tax.
