Engineering Council of South Africa Chief Executive Officer

The Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) is established in terms of the Engineering Professions Act (EPA), No 46 of 2000. ECSA’s vision is to ensure that South Africa enjoys all the benefits of a strong, competent, growing, sustainable and representative engineering profession, able to provide all the expertise necessary for the socio – economic needs of the country and to exert a positive influence in South Africa.
ECSA seeks to engage an appropriately qualified and experienced Chief Executive Officer (CEO) on a five year contract. The CEO will be expected to effectively execute ECSA’s role of being a custodian of the Engineering Intellectual Capital in South Africa, by providing strategic leadership and management. The CEO must ensure that ECSA achieves its mandate as set out in the EPA and position itself as a recognised and preferred strategic partner by its stakeholders in Engineering matters.
Remuneration package: Market Related
Requirements:
A relevant technical qualification in the engineering field and at least ten years appropriate working experience, of which five years must have been at senior executive level.
Additional Requirements:
• The successful candidate must be registered in one of the engineering professional categories, be a visionary and a strategic leader who can work effectively with diverse interest groups, e. g academia, voluntary associations and Government departments.
• S/he will demonstrate an analytical, intellectual understanding of engineering industry landscape and its impact on the socio-economic imperatives of the country.
• The candidate must have a vision of how to transform the engineering profession in alignment with the requirements of the SA Constitution, expectations of the Government, socio-economic needs and relevant legislation.
• The leading candidate will be broadly informed; with a high level of intellectual curiosity and the capacity to drive transformational programmes, achievement of ECSA’s role and responsibilities as set out in the EPA and encourage others to explore new terrain (change management imperatives).
• The CEO needs to work in an interdisciplinary manner and be a creative thinker who can be innovative and pragmatic. S/he will be an open-minded, confident professional who enjoys exploring issues while also recognizing that ownership of ideas is less important than the result of the collaborative effort.
• The CEO will be an enabler and facilitator who will have the strength of character and conviction to work with a strong, engaged Council and its sub-structures as well as ECSA employees who are dedicated to the vision and mission of ECSA.
• Effective written and oral communication skills are critical to ensure that the CEO will be effective and persuasive in presenting ECSA and lobbying its vision and mission to its affiliates and various Government agencies and the public.
• The CEO will be equally adept at developing relationships with lobby groups, ability to obtain funding for special projects as well as the ability to engage in the national conversation on Engineering Profession at large.
• The CEO must have an in- depth knowledge of the various areas in which ECSA operates, inclusive of registration, accreditation and standards development.

• A successful candidate will have strong organizational, administrative, and financial management skills. S/he will be comfortable in a hands-on role and be willing to do the essential tasks required to meet the goals of Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).
