Intern - Legal Section, Special Advisory Services Division

Job Summary

The Intern will provide research and support to Advisers in the Economic and Legal Section (ELS):
  • undertake legal research and analysis;
  • compile information and data for use in ELS publications, briefings, reports and projects;
  • work closely with ELS Advisers and report to the Head of ELS; and,
  • perform any other tasks as delegated by the relevant Head of Section

Qualifications and Experience

  • Must be a citizen of a Commonwealth Member country or dependant territory thereof.
  • Be between the ages of 20 and 30 years of age.
  • Be enrolled in legal studies at a university, or equivalent tertiary institution, or be a university graduate in law.
  • Students enrolled in first degree programmes should have completed two years of full time study. Students pursuing post-graduate studies should be in the process of completing their degrees and wish to gain experience at the Commonwealth in the field in which they are enrolled.
  • Have the right to reside and work in the UK for the duration of the Internship. The Secretariat will not assist in applying for visas or altering the visa status of applications but will provide, where necessary, documentary evidence required for students under UK Immigration rules.
  • Be fluent in spoken and written English.
  • Possess strong legal research, analytical and written communication skills.
  • Be IT literate, including experience using Microsoft Word and database and e-mailing software.
  • Be able to work in a multi-cultural work environment.
Desirable
  • A good understanding of legal issues, with an emphasis on public international law, natural resources or international environmental law.
  • A good knowledge of the Commonwealth.
  • Experience in research for publications.

About the Special Advisory Services Division

The Economic and Legal Section (ELS) provides legal, economic and technical advisory services to Commonwealth Member countries concerning the development of natural resources, the delimitation of maritime boundaries and broader ocean’s governance matters.
