Senior Communication/PI Associate
Duty station: UNHCR Brussels - Regional Representation for Western Europe

Description of duties:
The incumbent will head the external relations unit of the UNHCR office during the period 13 January – 15 July 2014.
The incumbent will:
  • In consultation and coordination with the Regional Representative, take all measures necessary to promote a better public understanding of refugee-related issues and of UNHCR, in Belgium and in Luxembourg – this includes drafting press reports/releases, placing advertisements, organising press briefings/meetings, pro-actively seeking press contacts, etc;
  • Coordinate the work of the external relations unit in the UNHCR Regional Representation in Brussels including handling of media queries;
  • Develop public advocacy and/or outreach strategies on particular issues/situations, in coordination with all concerned UNHCR offices/staff;
  • Ensure the Regional Representative and/or all concerned staff is informed of evolving public opinion of refugee issues and consult on appropriate response;
  • Develop and coordinate the organization of public information/awareness events such as those on the occasion of 2014 World Refugee Day in Belgium and in Luxembourg;
  • Promote and ensure the dissemination of UNHCR news and briefing notes;
  • Coordinate publications for the UNHCR national Belgian website, including the drafting of web stories when necessary;
  • Attend meetings, prepare notes and undertake other duties as required by the Regional Representative.
     
 Qualifications:
  • Complete secondary education; university-level studies in communications, journalism, public affairs or international relations desired;
  • Fluent in English, French and Dutch.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills;
  • Excellent organizational abilities;
  • Good computer skills;
  • Past UN experience an advantage;
  • Flexible, positive, team player.
