Serengeti Ecosystem Development and Conservation Project: Integrated Protected Area and Rural Infrastructure Development and Financial Management (KfW)
The Serengeti ecosystem is one of the largest intact savannah ecosystems in the world. Biodiversity conservation and sustainable natural resource management in this famous UNESCO World Heritage Site is of global, national and local importance. Yet, livelihood improvement of the poor population living in the greater Serengeti ecosystem is of equal importance and a prerequisite for sustainable biodiversity conservation.
International Chief Technical Adviser (CTA) (5 years)
The International Chief Technical Advisor will work on a full-time basis in the field.
Position-specific tasks to be covered by the expert:
  • Advise TANAPA/SENAPA on the successful overall implementation of the Project;
  • Work in close coordination and cooperation with the members of the Project Management Team, international, national and local stakeholders under the guidance of TANAPA/SENAPA;
  • Oversight of the achievement of the programme objectives and outputs in accordance with the contractually agreed qualities, costs and time lines;
  • Manage the disposition fund;
  • Act as local primary point of contact for TANAPA/SENAPA and FZS (Frankfurt Zoological Society).
Profile (Qualifications):
  • Postgraduate university degree in rural development, landscape planning / architecture, civil engineering, infrastructure planning, physical planning and construction, or similar; specialisation in protected area development or a similar field of natural resource management would be a strong asset;
  • Proven track record in the interface between natural resource management and infrastructure development (relevant fields are protected area management with focus on infrastructure, rural infrastructure development, integrated rural development, community development, participation of local communities);
  • Work experience with innovative environmentally-friendly construction design, planning and technology would be an asset (e.g. energy-saving technologies, renewable energy, and other resource-conserving approaches);
  • Work experience preferably in African countries with similar socio-economic conditions; previous work on infrastructure development within protected areas in Africa would be a strong asset;
  • Work experience as team leader in long-term assignments;
  • Proven background in management and financial administration of development projects;
  • Professional experience with donor-funded projects; specific knowledge of German Financial Cooperation (KfW management procedures, reporting, etc.) would be a strong asset;
  • At least 10 years of practical professional experience in the sector;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Proficiency in the English language; basic language skills in Swahili would be of advantage;
  • Team player, who is capable of working under different and sometimes difficult conditions.
