Peace Building Manager, UMCOR Sudan

LOCATION: Darfur, Sudan

PURPOSE: The Peace Building Manager plays an important role in the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) Sudan's field management structure. UMCOR’s program areas in the Sudan focus primarily on the fields of emergency relief and transitional development, which include but are not limited to the following sectors: water and sanitation, food security, health, education/child protection, shelter construction, camp coordination, peace building and community development. This position is based in Darfur. The contract is for a period of twelve (12) months.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The Peace Building Manager will be responsible for the management, planning, implementation and monitoring of UMCOR’s peace-building activities in Sudan, but primarily in Darfur. He/she coordinates with other partners including donors and local authorities to support peace initiatives and their contribution to UMCOR-Sudan programs:

• Manage the implementation of peace building activities within the framework of ongoing programs funded by UNDP, OFDA and other private donors, including the formation of peace committees, the establishment of community peace centers, the creation of conflict monitoring systems, and the development of training curriculum.
• Closely coordinate the peace building activities with other relevant program sectors – Watsan, Education, and Agriculture;
• Provide guidance on mainstreaming peace-building as a cross-cutting theme across all UMCOR programs;
• Closely coordinate with local authorities to improve their understanding and support for the project;
• Conduct monitoring and evaluation (M&E) activities for ongoing and ending projects;
• Prepare and submit regular internal and donor reports on all peace building activities;
• Provide training and technical guidance for UMCOR national staff on peace-building activities;
• Assist in overseeing project assets and tracking spending;
• Plan/lead and participate in various assessments and stakeholder analysis in UMCOR’s areas of operation;
• Ensure lessons learned are captured and incorporated into UMCOR programs in a systematic way;
• Assist in researching, writing and submitting proposals for new peace building initiatives to expand UMCOR Sudan’s work in this area;
• Assist in monitoring the security situation in UMCOR’s areas of operation, report any potential risks and recommended appropriate action to the Program Manager; and
• Assume any other duties assigned by the Program Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS and Professional Experience:
• The position requires a degree in a relevant field (project management / conflict / education / development, community development or equivalent).
• At least 3 years of field experience with INGOs in the field of peace-building or conflict resolution
• Understanding and experience of issues related to conflict resolution

KNOWLEDGE:
• Knowledge of approaches to peace building / conflict resolution, training methods / curriculum development, and related best practices, etc.;
• Knowledge of researching, data analysis and reporting; and
• Knowledge of UN and Institutional Donor policies and procedures including project’ monitoring and impact evaluation

ABILITIES:
• Must possess excellent representation and negotiation skills, diplomacy and patience;
• A team player with good interpersonal and team building skills;
• Ability to work in post conflict environment and insecure regions with limited resources; and
• Ability to understand the cultural and political environment and to work well with local authorities in a diplomatic manner.
