The WorldFish Center, located on the island of Penang, Malaysia, is a world-class scientific research organization. Our mission is to reduce poverty and hunger by improving fisheries and aquaculture. We have offices in 8 countries and engage in collaborative research with more than 200 partners in more than 25 countries. The Center is a nonprofit organization and a member of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).

A unique opportunity based in Cambodia has arisen for gifted individuals to contribute to the mission of the Center.

RESEARCH FELLOW

Key Responsibilities
• Providing leadership, conceiving, designing and conducting research, and developing research solutions to meet specified objectives;
• Managing and mentoring WorldFish and NARS science teams by providing support and building up team skills on technical subject matters;
• Promoting cross-disciplinary and participatory approaches for analyzing institutional and policy challenges relating to food security, ecology, livelihoods and natural resources management;
• Leading WorldFish projects with a significant proportion of time dedicated to the regional Wetlands Alliance programme;
• Publishing results of research in peer-reviewed scientific journals, and other media, and preparing manuals synthesizing information on topics within the specific subject matter particularly related to participatory processes in development;
• Mentoring and supervising junior research staffs and developing teams;
• Identifying opportunities and contributing to the development of research and management partnerships with scientists, agencies and institutes (including CGIAR Centers) in appropriate areas of expertise;
• Providing leadership in the development of new research proposals at regional and global levels; and
• Facilitating the implementation of external reviews and contributing to other activities and processes of the discipline and other Center activities as required.

Skills and Abilities
Essential
• Strong research skills and an ability to critically assess and synthesize existing research;
• Project management, partner relations, and communications skills; demonstrated ability to work in multi-partner multi-disciplinary research collaboration including an ability to effectively handle multiple priorities and work independently under deadlines; and
• Proven track record in developing funded proposals.
Desired
• Ability to adapt and communicate effectively in a wide range of cultural settings and with different stakeholders;
• Demonstrated expertise in integrating social and ecological factors; with application to small-scale fisheries an advantage; and
• Capacity to establish a publishing track record in relevant field.

Qualifications and Experiences
Essential
• Masters in social science field (e.g. sociology, geography, anthropology, political science, rural development planning, natural resources economics, institutional economics, development policy, law, etc.); and
• Working experience addressing social dimensions of natural resources management, rural development, or fisheries and aquaculture in Southeast Asia.
Desired
• Ph.D in social science field related to development and specifically aquatic resource related issues;
• Managing action research projects addressing poverty and development issues
• Track record in developing successful project proposals; and
• Peer-reviewed publication record.
