Chair - Marshall Aid Commemoration Commission

The Marshall Aid Commemoration Commission was founded by a 1953 Act of Parliament, in order to express gratitude to the American people for the post-war support and assistance conceived by Secretary of State George C Marshall, now known as the Marshall Plan. The Act created postgraduate scholarships in the UK for American students with the potential to excel in their chosen fields of study and future careers. Each year, up to 40 Marshall scholarships are awarded, some in partnership with outstanding UK universities.

The role

The Chair has responsibility for:

  • Leading the Commission responsible for administering Marshall scholarships, which are granted to outstanding students from the United States to pursue postgraduate study in the UK.
  • Maintaining and ensuring others maintain a strong longer-term vision for a vibrant and effective Marshall scholarships programme, against the context of pressures on Government funding, changes in higher education, and the changing nature of the UK/US relationship
  • Setting direction for the Commission and the scholarship programme and monitoring performance
  • Acting as the public face of and ambassador for the Commission, promoting and communicating the Commission’s views as required
  • Securing additional outside funding for the programme
  • Co-ordinating and directing the contributions of Commission members presenting different views and opinions.

All members of the Commission have responsibility for:

  • overseeing the grant-in-aid provided by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office for Marshall Scholarships for talented young graduates from the United States
  • overseeing the selection of Scholars (delegated to Regional Committees in the USA and the Ambassador's Advisory Council in Washington)
  • ensuring Scholars receive appropriate advice and assistance in the UK
  • ensuring the programme makes a valuable and enduring contribution to UK/US relations.
