Petra Diamonds is an important supplier of rough diamonds to the international market, with a major resource base of 309 million carats. The company offers an exceptional growth profile within the diamond sector, with a core objective to grow annual production to around 4 million carats by FY 2014 and further increase output to over 5 million carats by FY 2019. The following vacancy exists at Helam Mines, situated in Swartruggens:

Chief Safety Officer

The incumbent will be responsible for the co-ordination of SHREQ management systems for Helam Mine.

Duties and responsibilities: • Deliver qualitative SHREQ advice to line managers in accordance with relevant policies, procedures and applicable national and international legislation • Facilitate the development and implementation of SHREQ management systems, exposure control programmes and measures • Analyse, evaluate and assess SHREQ activities, incidents and non-conformances and make recommendations • Report on both lead/proactive and lag/reactive indicators with regard to SHREQ management • Ensure the implementation and maintenance of SHREQ systems that contribute to a safe and productive environment • Plan and prepare the budget • Maintain and implement SHREQ systems to ensure continual improvement in SHREQ performance • Ensure continuous improvement of SHREQ systems through integration, optimisation and maintenance of SHREQ systems.

Requirements: • A Grade 12 or equivalent • A National Diploma in Safety Management • A Mine Overseer’s Certificate • SAMTRAC/COMSOC/SHEMTRAC or similar • Registration as a Safety Professional with IOSM • 8 years’ experience • A Code 08 driver’s licence.

Candidates will be required to undergo a Medical Examination of Fitness, as per the inherent requirements of the position.
