Consultant – Gender, Agriculture and Climate Change

The International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) is an organization comprised of international development professionals – researchers, advocates and program managers – committed to the creation and sharing of the needed tools, approaches and techniques that will serve as catalysts for change for women worldwide.

ICRW seeks a Research Associate (RA) for a short-term consultancy (30 days between August-October, 2011) to support research and analysis on a policy paper on gender, agriculture and climate change. In the context of the recent rise in food and energy prices and the potential effects of climate change, the paper will examine from a gender perspective the challenges for agricultural development.

TASKS:
Under the direction of the Director, Economic Development, the RA will provide support to the Director and a small team by:
• Conducting literature reviews, secondary data searches, and synthesizing findings
• Conducting phone or in-person interviews with selected individuals
• Obtaining quantitative data and preparing tables and charts
• Contributing to writing, formatting, editing, and/or revising drafts of the papers and associated briefs and other publications
• Conducting quantitative and qualitative data analysis.

Our ideal candidate will have a Master’s degree in a related field (economics, international development or other social science); and four (4) years related experience with an intermediate understanding of qualitative and quantitative methods. Experience with literature reviews, research methodology and policy research is required. Strong computer skills are required to include proficiency in the MS Office Suite, (Outlook, Word, Excel) and Internet applications including online database applications (e.g. MEDLINE, POPLINE). A working knowledge of quantitative and qualitative data analysis software (e.g. SPSS, STATA or Nudist, Atlas Ti, etc.) is desired. Knowledge of gender and development issues is required.

Excellent writing, communication, and analytical skills are essential, with excellent organizational skills and detail orientation. Must be able to work independently with initial guidance on the task, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines and have demonstrated creativity and experience with gathering data.
