Drill and Blast Engineer in Mozambique

Rio Tinto has recently acquired control of Riversdale in Mozambique to form Rio Tinto Coal Mozambique (RTCM). RTCM currently has 2 projects, the Benga project, which is set to produce first coal in 2012, and the Zambeze project, which is at feasibility stage.
The primary purpose of the Engineer Drill and Blast is to provide and coordinate timely and effective planning, monitoring and performance improvement for the drill and blast operations, delivering the most cost effective method.
Key Accountabilities:
  • Provide and coordinate timely and effective planning, monitoring and performance improvement for the drill and blast operations, delivering the most cost effective and safe method.
  • Prepare drill and blast designs
  • Ensure drill patterns are designed to take into account pit design, wall stability and ground conditions.
  • Ensure all preventative measures are taken to avoid blast related coal damage.
  • Develop and implement blasting improvement programs including strategies to reduce drill and blast costs to the business.
  • Compile and communicate drill and blast schedules.
  • Manage databases to ensure the provision of accurate and timely performance statistics. Collate statistics and report regularly and as required.
  • Build positive relationships across Technical Services and Mining operation to ensure smooth operation of drill and blast activity.
  • Monitor HSE Policies and Procedures, Safe Work Instructions, Standard Operating Procedures, and relevant Statutory and Mine Site Rules
  • Maintain quality assurance standards and practices by conducting audit checks and inspections of drilling and blasting requirements

Your qualifications / experience should include:

  • Tertiary qualifications (post graduate qualifications will be advantageous) in a relevant discipline.
  • At least five years experience in a similar role with proven cost effective performance in an open cut mining environment.
  • Experience using drill and blast software combined with drill and blast design knowledge and experience
  • Previous drill and blast experience and exposure to other technical services such as geology
  • High level of computing skills, with exposure to mine planning packages and drill and blast software.
  • Ability to develop effective professional relationships in a collaborative team environment to provide quality, value driven service.
  • Continuous improvement focus and strong safety focus.
  • Knowledge of explosive products and / or open cut blasting applications
  • Ability to develop good working relationships with co-workers, drillers and shot firers
  • UHL or shot firers ticket
