Professor in Journalism University of Kent

The Role
The Centre for Journalism is seeking to appoint a Director of Research to nurture, lead and develop its research activities and to lead the teaching of politics to undergraduate and postgraduate students. The job purpose is to provide research and teaching leadership, to nurture the research careers of academic staff and postgraduate research students within the Centre, and to make an outstanding research contribution. We wish to appoint a senior researcher who can demonstrate a clear record of publications in top quality books and journals. The position has been created due to the rapid development and early success of the department. We seek to develop a top-rated research profile to complement our reputation for excellence in the professional higher education of students committed to careers in journalism.
The Person
The successful applicant will have a PhD or equivalent in a relevant discipline and a record of successful completion of internationally excellent research including publication in refereed academic journals. Relevant experience of teaching at degree level along with the appropiate teaching skills at both undergraduate and postgraduate level are essential for this post.
With sound research and research management skills you will possess excellent writing, presentation and communication skills appropriate for leadership, teaching and representational duties.
The Department
The Centre for Journalism is one of the most successful professionally accredited Journalism departments in the UK. Based on the Medway Campus it was established in 2007 and admitted its first students in 2008. It has rapidly established a reputation for excellence in the education of academically able students who aspire to work as multimedia journalists. Intensive teaching of professional journalism skills and ethics takes place in dedicated multimedia newsrooms and broadcast studios in the University's Gillingham Building.
The Centre prides itself on promoting an intensely supportive, collegiate environment for students and staff. All students receive individual tuition and supervision and teaching of professional elements of the degree programmes takes place in a live newsroom environment. Students produce journalism on regular live news days and staff and students submit news and comment pieces to the Centre's live publishing website www.centreforjournalism.com.
