The Faculty of Sciences offers (inter)disciplinary research and teaching in the fields of Physics, Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Mathematics to Computer Sciences. The research focus is on topics like physics of life & energy, multiscale modeling, systems biology, drug discovery, the networked world, stochastics and mathematical analysis.
The Faculty research is organized in four departments: Computer Sciences, Physics and Astronomy, Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences and Mathematics. Further, the Faculty participates in several interdisciplinairy research institutes. The students participate in ten undergraduate programmes and twelve two-years master’s programmes.
Science, Business & Innovation (SBI) is a new research and education program based on the valorisation of knowledge in two of the main focus areas of VU University Amsterdam, i.e. Human Health & Life Sciences (H2LS) and Science for Sustainability (S4S). The research program will be focused on the dynamics of knowledge valorisation, i.e., the transfer of scientific knowledge on life and health sciences and energy and sustainability sciences to the business community, valorisation embedded in research on the above-mentioned sciences and the role of valorisation in the triple-helix constellation. The research program builds on the successful SBI BSc and MSc education program, which attracts considerable attention from students that have a strong interest to combine natural sciences with business and innovation, and which aims to train the students to become science entrepreneur.
To fuel the developments described above, a new chair Science, Business and Innovation will be created that will cover both the life and energy science activities of SBI. Applicants should preferably cover both activities.
Tasks
The successful candidate will be central in the new SBI division of FEW, with current staff members from FEW and the faculties of Economics and Business Administration (FEWEB) and Social Sciences (FSW), and should:
- play a leading role in the SBI research programme and play a central and coordinating role in combining the research expertise of the three founding faculties FEW, FEWEB and FSW;
- teach bachelor and master courses on SBI, and to further develop these programs, in collaboration with the other participating FEW/FEWEB/FSW-partners;
- acquire research grants;
- play an active role in local, national and international research and business projects in this field;
- supervise master and PhD students;
- perform management tasks for the department.
Requirements
The ideal candidate must:
- have a PhD in chemistry, physics, pharmaceutical sciences, energy sciences, or a related discipline, with a proven track record in technology analysis, intellectual property assessments, valorisation (e.g., in the context of spin-offs, public-private partnerships, business development), and innovation management (e.g., studying concepts that stimulate innovation);
- have an internationally proven academic track record;
- have experience in supervising academic projects;
- be an inspiring lecturer and have experience in teaching academic courses;
- have experience and have been proven successful in acquiring grants.
