Greenpeace is campaigning for an toxics free world. To further the strategic development of our toxics campaign globally we are now seeking a political advisor, preferably to be based in Brussels. The person we are looking for should bring a deep understanding of the toxics policy debate and its stakeholders in the North and South. The person should have at least 5 years professional experience. A successful candidate should be knowledgeable of macro Toxics policies tactics and the various political fora in place on the global level. The successful candidate will help us identify key political fora to engage with; and will primarily work and advise our office in East Asia on fora and processes to deliver the campaign goals. The successful candidate will be part of a team shaping and deliver our exciting DETOX campaign
Job description
KEY TASK:
- Play a strategic role in strengthening Greenpeace East Asia's (GP EA) involvement in international chemical negotiations (including the Stockholm Convention and SAICM (Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management) by increasing Greenpeace East Asia's relevance and visibility in these fora, and exerting influence on China's negotiation stance. To achieve this primary objective, the person needs to
a. Strategically advise and agree with the GPEA toxics team in the preparation of positions, strategies and tactics within the above-mentioned fora, delivering on GPEA's campaign objectives as well as Greenpeace global objectives and aims. This includes the development of strategic political roadmaps for the issue as well as the coordination and development of policies on relevant issues to ensure that Greenpeace can respond effectively to new opportunities.
b. Work with the GPEA toxics policy campaigner in the preparation and drafting of position papers, interventions (formal and informal) and press materials within the above-mentioned fora. Prepare substantive briefings, updates, and talking points with the campaign and communications officers concerned to ensure the consistent external communication of issues. Represent Greenpeace in all forms of media, both proactively and reactively, in relation to the above-mentioned fora.
c. Monitor key developments within these fora and provide timely and concise analysis to the GPEA team and others within Greenpeace. Develop and maintain extensive contacts and relationships with all relevant political and business bodies and other NGOs in order to build effective networks and partnerships that promote Greenpeace campaign and organizational objectives.
d. Serve as a liaison person between the GPEA team and key stakeholders in other countries/regions, particularly in the EU, if requested by GPEA; - Advise and support Greenpeace National and Regional Offices’ (NROs) in their implementation of international political and legislative components of Greenpeace campaigns in accordance with organisational and campaign objectives to ensure that these components are understood and consistently applied. Specifically offices in Asia will be provided with assistance on policy roadmaps.
- Represent Greenpeace International at relevant international negotiations in order to ensure that the objectives, recommendations and submissions of Greenpeace are effectively presented and adopted in accordance with strategic campaign and organizational objectives.
In addition, and as a secondary Task, the Advisor will:
- provide policy input into Greenpeace´s negotiations with corporations – alerting the campaign for example to latest developments in international negotiations or at national level that can further strengthen our corporate dialogue advocacy
- provide strategic advice to corporate work in order to maximize its impact on policy developments – i.e. develop specific calls for corporations to support key legislative change internationally or in key countries.
