Job Description
  1. The Director is responsible for developing and strengthening the organization’s relationship with institutional donors, including US government entities, professional foundations and multi-lateral donors. Cultivates relationships and increases organizational visibility in international development fora, particularly related to revenue streams. Oversees the Grants Acquisition and Management team to grow and manage a dependable, balanced grant portfolio in cooperation with Regional and National Office staff.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides leadership and strategic direction for the global grants acquisition and management staff responsible for the planning, coordination and implementation of a complex grants portfolio and highly technical special projects.
  • Builds strategic relationships and strengthens the organization’s profile with federal agency, international NGO, and foundation senior staff, as well as key policymakers.
  • Investigates and creates funding opportunities through active engagement with professional foundations, federal organizations and Congressional staff.
  • Oversees the development of organizational processes for grants acquisition. This includes identifying and researching institutional donor prospects; strategic profiling and networking; advising on bid submission strategies; overseeing quality proposal development; and negotiating with partners and consortia.
  • Coordinates with the Resource Development department, Finance and Operations, and regional point persons to set grant award and revenue targets, as well as the strategies to win and support them.
  • Oversees organizational strategy to ensure consistent approaches to resolving strategic relationship issues with donors and partners, taking the lead role as required to advance organizational interests.
  • In coordination with regional offices and life stage teams, develops and maintains an organizational strategy to ensure all post-award financial, program performance, compliance and contractual aspects of awards are followed and met.
  • Facilitates negotiations for reimbursements and no-cost extensions in coordination with life stage team directors in Program Development.
  • Actively participates and contributes to relevant inter-agency working groups’ discussions to increase organization’s profile as a key player supporting organization’s mission.
  • Serves as a member of the senior management team in program development, including in the coaching and performance management of staff.
Required Skills
  • 10+ years experience interacting with various government entities in grants and contracts acquisition and management, and establishment of organizational visibility, especially with USAID, DOL or other federal agencies.
  • Proven experience as a strong manager of people and the development of organizational processes and strategies
  • Prior experience leading a team to write grants and seek governmental funding opportunities.
  • Thorough understanding and proven track record of obtaining governmental grants and successful advocacy record of legislative process.
  • Understanding of USG grants submission, procurement, and compliance requirements and regulations.
  • Proven experience in project management, grant portfolio development and setting up compliance processes.
  • Existing relationships with elected officials, agency heads and policymakers preferred.
  • Strong strategic thinking to develop creative, effective strategies to achieve organization’s grants business objectives.
  • Strong communication skills, teamwork, networking, and working under stress.
  • Excellent English writing
  • Demonstrated multi-cultural skills and proven success working in a multi-cultural work environment.
  • Fluency in French and/or Spanish is desired
  • Required travel in developing countries.

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in International Development or a field related to the organization’s core program required
