Editor: Economic News – TV and Radio News
DIVISION: NEWS AND CURRENT AFFAIRS

Reporting to the GM: TV News and CA & GM: Radio and CA, the successful candidate will manage and guide the News and Current Affairs Economics Team in the delivery of business, finance, investment and economics news for SABC News.

Key accountabilities: • Identify the main economics stories for the day and assign journalists accordingly • Deliver the required quality and quantity of TV and radio stories each day • Deliver news items that reflect and affect the economic realities of all South Africans • Coordinate sound coverage of business and economics for all programmes within the News Division • Keep control of the essence and facts of stories • Strictly adhere to set deadlines • Ensure that all stories adhere to SABC editorial policies and other ethical and governance requirements • Build and maintain an extensive news network in the external marketplace • Liaise with all editors in the News and CA division • Cost-effectively utilise the News and CA economics budget • Effectively direct, manage the performance of and develop the News and CA Economics Team • Ensure the effective coverage of issues relating to SMEs and black economic empowerment.

Requirements: • A degree in Journalism or equivalent • A diploma in Economics or equivalent • 10 years’ experience in the news broadcasting industry, of which 6 years must have been in economics reporting • In-depth knowledge and understanding of the South African economic situation and its historical complexities • An understanding of the South African economic situation in relation to the regional, continental and international economics environment • The ability to present economics information in layman’s terms.

Preference will be given, but not limited, to candidates from the designated groups in terms of the Employment Equity Act and the SABC’s employment equity initiatives.
