Brief description: DFID has a number of current, or anticipated, vacancies for livelihoods advisers in country or regional programmes. The majority of these are based overseas, a number in fragile environments. Any UK vacancies are likely to be in the DFID office in Scotland.

DFID is particularly interested in recruiting livelihoods advisers with knowledge and experience in agricultural growth & rural development; food & nutrition security; rural markets, value chains & trade; agricultural adaptation to climate change, social protection and international forestry/forest governance.

DFID's Livelihoods advisers lead and support agendas relating to wealth creation, pro-poor growth, regional trade, hunger, food and nutrition security, reducing vulnerability and building resilience to shocks, climate change etc.

Livelihoods advisers play a major role in:

  • analysis and the formulation of policies for country aid strategy;
  • establishing close and constructive relationships and networks with partners in country, regionally and internationally;
  • identification, design, commissioning and monitoring the implementation and impact of programmes and policies in areas covered by DFID’s livelihoods advisers;
  • design and monitoring the impact of livelihoods aspects of programmes and policies in other priority areas for development such as governance and conflict, health, education and infrastructure and climate change;
  • working with other Whitehall departments on a broad range of livelihoods related issues (such as agriculture, trade, rural development, food and nutrition security, forestry, climate change, social protection, resource scarcity, etc) relevant to developing countries.

Candidates will be expected to demonstrate knowledge and experience across the range of livelihoods technical competences and the required developing country experience in the selection process, drawing on their familiarity with policy guidance, best practice guidelines and practical examples from experience in which they have been involved.

Relocation support may be available where successful candidates are required to move home to take up post.
