Founded in Geneva in September 1996, the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD) aims to influence the international trade system such that it advances the goal of sustainable development. As an independent, non-profit, and non-governmental organization, ICTSD engages a broad range of actors in ongoing dialogue on trade and sustainable development policy. In advancing its mission, the Centre has become a leading broker of knowledge and information on trade policy and sustainable development.

Qiao is a bi-monthly periodical focused on trade and sustainable development for the Chinese speaking world. Qiao is an integral part of ICTSD Bridges Network as well as its China Initiative.

ICTSD’s China Initiative is committed to leveraging China’s role in global trade governance for sustainable development for all. By taking a FORESEE (4C) strategy of Communication, Collaboration, Capacity and Contribution, the programme conducts impact oriented activities, including news analysis, dialogues, research and policy consultations.
Under the supervision of the Managing Director for Bridges Series, the consultant will perform the following tasks:

- Lead and ensure high quality and timely production of Qiao (ICTSD Bridges Publication in Chinese, the link: http://ictsd.org/chinese/china/qiao/)
- Ensure strong and growing outreach and distribution with the objective of engaging global Chinese audiences involved in trade and sustainable development issues.
- Source leading edge research and analysis for inclusion in Qiao; ensure that Qiao readers have regularly updated news and analysis that effectively communicates the relevance of emerging ideas in the field.

Update and actively use social networks and other tools to engage policymakers and influencers.

Competencies.

1. Demonstrated journalistic capacity. The editor must have the capacity and knowledge to write and edit professionally in Chinese (and with sufficient English capacity to communicate with other team members on key developments and reporting). The editor must have the ability to convey complex concepts and relationships, in a clear, technically correct manner to both expert and non expert audiences from different backgrounds.
2. Knowledge and experience in trade and economic policy and sustainable development. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated grounding in both areas.
3. Creativity: ability to explore new ideas and emerging issues and to develop innovative approaches. Good research, analytical and problem-solving skills.
4. Ability to conduct outreach and engagement both for authors and for audience development.
5. Ability to set and meet deadlines regularly and to manage external authors to do the same.
6. Teamwork: Good interpersonal skills; ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with ICTSD partner organizations; works collaboratively with ICTSD colleagues to achieve organizational goals. Ability and willingness to work with an internal (but geographically distributed) editorial team including issue experts who will help ensure that content is relevant and correct.
7. Ability and willingness to work with layout and design professional to produce final products.
8. Planning & organizing: ability to establish priorities and to plan, coordinate and monitor own work plan.
9. Technical facility@ capacity to work with web and electronic media.
10. The editor must be conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results, ability to apply good judgment in the context of assignments given; ability to plan own work and manage conflicting priorities.

Education

A master degree in economics, environment, development, international relations, political sciences, journalism or related area. Qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the master degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in areas reporting and / or journalistic writing related to international trade and sustainable development and related fields. Living, educational or working experience in developing countries and proven cross-cultural and gender sensitivity are desirable.

Languages

For the post advertised, native-level oral and written Chinese is required. As English is the working language of ICTSD, successful candidates must be proficient in oral and written English.

Duration / Remuneration / Legal:

- This post is for a short-term duration of six months and may be extended, depending on availability of funds. The post is conceived as a 50% commitment; this may be increased if funds become available.
- The editor will be based in China, preferably Beijing, and will be compensated at competitive local rates.
- It is anticipated that the editor will be a Chinese national, not requiring working permits in China.
- It is anticipated that the editor will spend a period of time in Geneva building collaboration with other editors and programme officers.
