expert practitioner to train a TV crew in Kazakhstan on TV reporting in arduous and risky situations

Would you like to help journalists who are working under harsh conditions to improve their work and security? And is it your wish to support Free Press Unlimited to contribute to the development of open and democratic societies, by supporting independent media in regions of conflict and countries in transition?

Free Press Unlimited is looking for an expert practitioner to train a TV crew in Kazakhstan on TV reporting in arduous and risky situations. The practical training is designed to equip the journalists, cameramen, the fixers with tools to remain safe while getting the story out.

The trainer will also offer insight into newsgathering process, how to prepare a report, how to better (safely) place and use the equipment and how to communicate (ICT, telephone, online, chat) securely. Last but not least, how to transmit the material to the editorial/broadcasting desk.

After the training the participants will be able to better assess the risks when reporting in hostile environment; how to deal with riots, protests, violent strikes; and how to manage desk & field journalists in times of crisis. Practical exercises will be combined with theory on field reporting, smart but safe story shooting.

The trainer must also be able to develop and/or gather training materials. It is important that the trainer should speak fluent Russian (otherwise English interpreting is possible but can affect the efficiency and the speed of the training) and have experience with teaching and have well developed training skills.

The 3 to 4 days training will take place in Kazakhstan within the period 15 September - 15 October for 10 participants.

The mission would last a maximum of 7 days (including travel). Free Press Unlimited’s conditions are: daily allowances (covering F&B and local transport); international transfers and hotel expenses, a lump sum fee (to be negotiated depending on experience and skills).

You can mail your motivation letter and your CV (preferably in PDF) before August 31st to reportersrespond@freepressunlimited.org. If you have questions you can reach the central desk at +31 35 6254 300.
