Geotechnical Engineer Australia Sunrise Dam

AngloGold Ashanti Limited (AGA) is the world's third largest gold producer with 20 operations in 10 countries on four continents and a highly successful exploration program. In Australia, AGA operates the Sunrise Dam Gold Mine in WA and is developing the Tropicana Gold Mine, also in WA, in which it has a 70% interest and is manager. Independence Group holds the remaining 30%. Tropicana, which represents the most significant Australian gold discovery for the last decade, is scheduled to begin production in the December quarter of 2013.

Located in the Laverton region, AngloGold Ashanti Australia's Sunrise Dam is one of Western Australia's premier gold mines. This open pit and underground operation employs more than 600 people and produces approximately 350,000 oz of gold per annum. Operating on an attractive 8/6 fly-in fly-out roster, Sunrise Dam boasts excellent accommodation and facilities.

We are now seeking an experienced and committed Geotechnical Engineer to join our Underground Mining team at Sunrise Dam Gold Mine

Reporting to the Underground Technical Services Manager, this role is accountable for co-ordinating and aligning all geotechnical aspects of U/G mining operations: geotechnical and monitoring data collection, evaluation & interpretation of geotechnical data, analysis of designs, monitoring of design versus actual, advising mine planning and production engineers.

The main tasks of the role include:

  • Ensure personal compliance with company safety requirements and assist in developing and implementing improved work practices to reduce the risk of injury and improve productivity.
  • The timely validation and interpretation of geotechnical data, through ongoing data collection and evaluation, and maintaining and keeping up to date the geotechnical database and model.
  • Design, maintain and upgrade the site geotechnical monitoring systems, and maintain and develop the monitoring databases.
  • Carry out stability analysis of excavations and analysis of designs through kinematics, empirical and numerical techniques under direction from the Senior Geotechnical Engineer and consultants.
  • Keeping abreast with new developments associated with geotechnical engineering.
  • Complete monthly and ad hoc reports on data gathering, evaluation, designs and monitoring.
  • Coordinate the use of consultants for geotechnical design and review, and manage geotechnical contractors on site

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Geological Engineering or equivalent
  • At least three years experience in the geotechnical aspects of underground and/or open pit mines. Preferably hard rock mines.
  • Very good analytical, planning and prioritising skills combined with the ability to utilise the knowledge gained.
  • Innovative with a strong desire to succeed

  • Good written and verbal skills
  • Superior organisational and interpersonal skills
