Human Rights Watch ADVOCACY/REFUGEE ASSOCIATE

Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking an Associate to provide administrative and clerical assistance to its Advocacy Division and Refugee Program. This position reports to the Washington Director and the Refugee Director, and also supports other members of both divisions.

Responsibilities:

1. Maintaining communication among HRW’s domestic and international offices;

2. Coordinating US government advocacy including scheduling official meetings for researchers, tracking policy, managing subscriptions and databases, and responding to internal and external requests for information;

3. Attending external working-group meetings and occasionally representing HRW at meetings and events;

4. Preparing, drafting, editing, formatting and distributing documents such as news releases, reports, letters, briefing papers, op‑eds, power point presentations, and other publications and arranging translations of completed documents; maintaining the Refugee and Migrants web pages onwww.HRW.org;

5. Assisting with research, legislative tracking, and monitoring of news and current events;

6. Assisting with special events;

7. Coordinating and making travel arrangements for research and advocacy trips;

8. Scheduling, and taking minutes at meetings;

9. Creating and maintaining extensive filing and archiving systems;

10. Recruiting and coordinating interns;

11. Recording departmental finances and managing expense reimbursements;

12. Word processing; photocopying; filing; faxing; answering phones; processing incoming mail; and

13. Carrying out other duties as required.

Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in a related field is required.

Experience: 1 year of relevant work experience is highly desirable.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

1. Prior office/administrative experience and strong organizational skills are required.

2. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are required.

3. Strong interest in international human rights is preferred.

4. Knowledge of the US government including Congress, the State Department, or other branches of the government preferred.

5. Prior academic or practical experience working with refugees or related international experience preferred.

6. Strong interpersonal skills are required.

7. Ability to work well under pressure while juggling multiple tasks simultaneously.

8. Ability to make sound decisions consistent with functions.

9. Ability to prioritize with minimal supervision and work independently as well as function as a member of a team.

10. Proficiency in computer packages including MS Office applications.

Other: Applicants for this position must possess current US work authorization valid for a minimum of two years from start date.

Salary and Benefits: Salary range starts at $40,310. Human Rights Watch offers comprehensive employer-paid benefits, including medical, dental, vision, disability and life insurance, an outstanding retirement savings plan and twenty (20) days vacation per year.
