MAP Specialists - Principal (Technical / Operations)

Rio Tinto, a world-class mining and mineral processing company, is searching for MAP Specialists - Principal to perform Operational and Technical duties at its Molybdenum Autoclave Plant (MAP) in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Molybdenum Autoclave Plant will be a state of the art chemical processing facility which uses new technologies and processes to produce chemical and technical grade molybdenum products. The MAP facility will begin commissioning in Q2 2013.
The MAP Specialist - Principal will be expected to control, operate, and maintain multiple types of chemical processing equipment within specified parameters to maximize production rates without compromising personnel safety, the environment, or equipment integrity. Areas of responsibility will include: continuous autoclaving, solvent extraction, drying and calcining, crystallization, packaging, shipping, shipping administration, rhenium recovery (ion exchange technology), ammonia stripping and absorption, laboratory (dry and wet), leaching, metals precipitation, molybdenum purification, reagents, concentrate receiving and central control room.
Accountabilities:
  • Promotes and exemplifies a Zero Harm work environment
  • Leads, instructs, trains, and serves as a role model to other employees
  • Ensures all health, safety and environmental standards for Rio Tinto and outside regulatory agencies are complied with
  • Ensures production is safely achieved in accordance with policies, procedures and regulatory requirements
  • Leads incident and accident investigations
  • Participates in Process Hazard Analyses and HSEQ audits
  • Provides fill-in support for MAP Superintendents
  • Responsible for monitoring and controlling all MAP chemical processes through the Distributed Control System (DCS) as required
  • Subject matter expert regarding operating and troubleshooting equipment and processes
  • Participates as a member of the Emergency Response Team (ERT) as required
  • Develops and reviews SOP's and RA's
  • Leads Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) investigations
  • Performs training (including classroom training) for other MAP Specialists as appropriate
  • Controls, inspects and maintains MAP facilities, processes, and equipment
  • Operates mobile, stationary and other plant equipment or machines to facilitate installation, repair work and plant operations
  • Performs consistent high quality laboratory work
  • Ensures facility appearance is acceptable and work environment is safe, clean and orderly
  • Participates in the quality control and assurance programs of the MAP facility by assisting proficiency testing audit samples and trouble shooting
  • Supports other MAP Specialists in achieving plant goals
Qualifications:
  • A minimum of 8 years experience in an industrial, chemical process, control room, or analytical laboratory setting preferred
  • Two year college degree, technical/trade degree, or equivalent experience is required
  • Must be able and willing to work a schedule that supports the business needs including: rotating shifts, weekend work, and holiday work.
  • Experience in autoclaving, solvent extraction, leaching, crystallizing and calcining is strongly preferred
  • Strong commitment and demonstration for Health, Safety and Environment required
  • Mechanical and electrical experience preferred
  • Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment
  • Strong computer skills, with proven ability to learn multiple systems and software
  • High-level skills in communication, including written, oral, and electronic forms required
  • Experience with DeltaV, PROVOX, or other DCS system is preferred
  • Experience with SAP, Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), or other Enterprise Systems is preferred
  • Demonstrate a style of participative management in problem solving, project implementation and continuous improvement
