Researcher Groundwater Hydrology International Water Management Institute New Delhi, India

The Person and the Job:
If you have obtained a PhD in groundwater hydrology or a related field and wish to contribute to improving the management of natural resources in the developing countries of Asia and Africa, a Researcher position with the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) could be just the right assignment for
you. You will be responsible for carrying out data-driven, groundwater modeling studies across a range of spatial scales and settings at various locations across South Asia to better understand groundwater processes and offer practical solutions in a multi-disciplinary research environment. The position holder will be based at the New Delhi Office of IWMI in India and will report to the Principal Researcher, Groundwater Management.
You will:
• undertake groundwater modeling to quantify water balance components and perform scenario analyses in problems related to:
o regional groundwater flows across national boundaries;
o surface water-groundwater interactions;
o watershed development programs/managed aquifer recharge; and
o climate change and land-use impacts.
• analyze large historic datasets to assess regional groundwater flows across state and national boundaries;
• assist interpretation and analysis of geologic and hydrogeologic data to build conceptual models of the groundwater regime;
• design and execute three-dimensional groundwater models under the guidance of senior researchers at IWMI to understand and quantify spatial and temporal recharge and discharge mechanisms;
• assist in the development of policies to help improve groundwat er management in areas where groundwater is the prime source of irrigation water;
• apply GIS and remote sensing tools, methods and datasets for ma pping watershed development and climate-related impacts on land use and geohydrology; and
• prepare research reports and journal articles for publication i n addition to conference/seminar papers.
You must possess:
• a PhD in the field of hydrogeology/environmental/irrigation/civil engineering or a closely related water resources discipline;
• a high level of competency in groundwater modeling and the use of quantitative methods to solving groundwater problems;
• experience in modeling surface water and groundwater interactions;
• experience in field research and translation of findings into i nnovative conceptual and/or quantitative models;
• proficiency in industry standard groundwater modeling software (MODFLOW and/or FEFLOW);
• competency in the application of GIS and remote sensing techniq ues to hydrological and geohydrological problems;
• experience in modeling surface water and groundwater interactions using numerical groundwater (flow) models, preferably in a r ange of settings and spatial scales;
• ability to capture and collate complex datasets from electronic and print databases, and synthesize these to address real-world issues;
• ability to develop pre-processors for data manipulation and ana lysis using Excel, Access, SURFER, etc.;
• ability to independently design and conduct field research;
• ability to work in a team with people from different cultural a nd professional backgrounds;
• strong analytical skills and a learning attitude;

• knowledge of soil-water or surface water hydrology principles a nd models;
• experience in conservative/reactive solute transport modeling; and
• experience with modern software languages and code development.
This is an internationally recruited position with a competitive salary and benefits package, which includes a housing allowance, transport, education, shipping assistance, annual home leave, retirement and health insurance package. IWMI’s policy is to appoint staff initially on three-year contracts which are subject to renewal, depending on performance and the Institute’s needs.

The International Water Management Institute (www.iwmi.org) is a non-profit, scientific organization engaged in research and capacity building activities for developing countries. Our mission is to overcome poverty through better management of land and water resources. Working with diverse partners and
supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (www.cgiar.org), IWMI seeks to translate its research findings into actionable recommendations for policymakers, resource managers and poor rural communities. IWMI is based in Sri Lanka and has regional offices in 12 countries in
Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.
IWMI is an equal opportunity employer and is keen to further diversify its staff in terms of both gender and nationality.
