(5 Year Full Time Contract Position)

Applications are invited for an appointment in the Transnet Centre of Systems Engineering (TCSE) contained in the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment. The Faculty offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes and its degrees are internationally accredited; it has a strong team of dedicated staff and excellent facilities.

Qualifications: A PhD and substantial publications are necessary, together with suitable professional qualifications.

Requirements: The candidate would be research active, with strong capabilities in systems engineering. He/she would be able to deal with engineering and organizational systems comprising people, technology, concepts and logistics, using inter alia, field and modelling research techniques, and would conduct and supervise research at all levels. He/she requires the personality, drive, experience and ability to adopt an intellectual leadership role in all aspects of systems engineering. A good knowledge of material pertaining to undergraduate and postgraduate courses in systems and industrial engineering is required. The successful candidate will have a proven record of practical experience and attracting funding through positive interactions with industry and the profession, including having played a leadership role in at least one large systems engineering project. He/she will be able to be registered as a Professional Engineer within a short time of his/her appointment.

Duties: Academic leadership in systems engineering, particularly pertaining to thematic areas and the development of long-term competencies defined in the TCSE; undergraduate and postgraduate lecturing; research leadership and project supervision (including field research); direct a significant research team (for which seed funding is provided), actively working in aspects of engineering systems, for example operations management, work force planning, organizational behaviour, logistical systems, quality management etc; initiation and co-ordination of research activities; active engagement with various industrial partners; University administration. He/she would be required to work closely with the TCSE Director and staff in pursuit of continuous innovation and practical problem-solving of systems-related challenges in both the longer- and shorter term. The ability to develop forward-looking new academic courses and training will be an advantage.
