Global Health Advocacy Manager RESULTS UK London, United Kingdom
There
are many organisations working to fight hunger and poverty around the
world. RESULTS UK's particular focus is unique: we work at a grassroots,
national and international level to create the political will to end
hunger and the worst aspects of poverty.
We have volunteer groups across the UK that meet at least once a month where we participate in a national conference call featuring guest experts and learn about a topical issue. Recent issues have included microfinance, education, sanitation and health (including HIV, TB and child health). The volunteers then support each other to take an action, such as meeting with their MPs, writing to decision-makers or getting letters published in newspapers.
The RESULTS network is supported by a small staff based in our London office that works in coalition with parliamentarians and organisations around the world to advocate on global poverty issues.
RESULTS UK has identified priority areas where we feel international efforts need to be intensified to achieve much needed development progress. These areas include; global health, particularly tuberculosis (TB) and vaccines for preventable diseases; education, particularly for girls and the disabled; water and sanitation and microfinance.
The ACTION Partnership (see www.action.org)
Since 2005, RESULTS UK has been involved with the ACTION Global Health Partnership, a network of advocacy organisations working to influence policy and mobilize resources to fight diseases of poverty and improve equitable access to health services. The ACTION Partnership seeks to address and reverse the global TB problem and to impact new global health issues such as immunization using our advocacy expertise through implementing cutting-edge, results-based advocacy and communication strategies. Activities to date have included educating policymakers and key leaders, cultivating champions, generating media, organising fact-finding trips for decision-makers, conducting policy research and building strategic partnerships.
The Role
With the broadening of the ACTION Partnership to include work on child survival and the World Bank’s health portfolio, RESULTS is looking to recruit a Global Health Advocacy Manager to lead our high-level policy and advocacy activities in these two issue areas.
Strategic advocacy around core global health issues including TB, child survival, health systems strengthening, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria and the World Bank will involve being familiar and engaged with broader themes in global health including knowledge around the interconnectedness of; HIV/AIDS, health workers, financial barriers to health care, and other maternal, new-born and child health and child survival issues.
The Global Health Advocacy Manager will coordinate our policy and advocacy on these issues, leading a team of five staff. This will involve not only planning and executing campaigns, but also setting strategy in conjunction with the Executive Director and our international ACTION partners.
Principal responsibilities
Working with the Executive Director and the overall ACTION Project Director (based in Washington DC) to develop and refine strategic goals and objectives for global health advocacy at the international and national levels;
Leading a team of five project staff in the development and implementation of multifaceted advocacy and campaign activities in the UK and abroad;
Identifying and leading research into relevant development and health policy, writing policy reports and briefings as strategic;
Leading project staff in engagement with relevant NGOs, coalitions, health experts, media and parliamentarians in the North and South as appropriate;
Overseeing the identification of potential champions for key areas of our work in the UK and EU, as well as the development and implementation of strategies to engage supporters;
Overseeing project staff in RESULTS engagement with and support of various relevant consortia, specifically the UK Coalition to Stop TB, TB Europe Coalition, and the European Immunization and Vaccines Advocacy Coalition secretariats, the UK Consortium on AIDS and International Development TB-HIV working group, and general engagement with the Consortium, and in identifying strategic advocacy opportunities for networked campaigns;
Ensuring that the team is gathering, collating and recording data for monitoring and evaluation of project, and utilising this information for better informed advocacy and campaign strategies;
Working with the Executive Director and Campaigns Manager to fully integrate global health advocacy activities with RESULTS UK strategic objectives and other campaign areas, and to provide specific knowledge and guidance to Global Health grassroots campaigns;
Leading project staff in the development of appropriate parliamentary proposals and submissions on Global Public Health policy and other related issues.
