Organizational Setting

The Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications implements the IAEA's major programme on nuclear techniques for development and environmental protection (Major Programme 2). This major programme comprises individual programmes in food and agriculture, human health, water resources, environment and radiation technologies. These programmes are supported by laboratories in Seibersdorf, Monaco and Vienna. The major programme's objective is to enhance the capacity of Member States to meet basic human needs and to assess and manage the marine and terrestrial environments through the use of nuclear and isotopic techniques in sustainable development programmes.

The Division of Physical and Chemical Sciences is one of several divisions and laboratories in the Department. It is responsible for carrying out IAEA activities to assist and advise Member States in assessing their needs for research and development in the nuclear sciences, as well as in supporting their activities in specific fields, including: industrial applications of radiation and isotopes; isotope hydrology and geochemistry; nuclear and analytical chemistry; atomic and nuclear data for applications; plasma physics applications; controlled nuclear fusion; production of radioisotopes and labelled compounds; radiation chemistry and utilization of research reactors.

The Nuclear Data Section is responsible for producing and disseminating fundamental atomic and nuclear data to Member States.

Main Purpose

Under the supervision of the Head of the Nuclear Data Services Unit, the Nuclear Data Services Assistant's main role is assisting the professional staff with EXFOR (EXchange FORmat database) compilation, database management, including use of SQL and website development with HTML.

Additionally, he/she will answer on- and off-line requests for data and produce the Section newsletters.

Working Relationships

The Nuclear Data Services Assistant interacts with professional and support staff within the Unit and the rest of the Nuclear Data Section. Interaction also includes with staff within the Division and other Departments as well as with international and national nuclear data centres and Member States' institutions to answer specific requests.

Functions / Key Results Expected

  • Compile experimental data in EXFOR database, including scanning documents relevant for EXFOR compilations (journal papers, conference proceedings, reports) and digitizing graphical data.
  • Ensure that various web pages of the NDS web site are maintained so as to ensure that the content is current and accurate. Assist staff with preparation of web pages using standard tools and templates.
  • Manage the documentation received by the Section related to nuclear data libraries ensuring a suitable level of quality management and make available for archiving and distribution in hardcopy and electronic formats. Maintain and develop the NDS Library (in both hardcopy and electronic formats). Maintain the ADLIST database and interact with INIS and Library staff to ensure all scientific applications are made available.
  • Prepare answers to online requests for data, documentation, PC media and data generated by means of SQL. Prepare and distribute approximately 200 hardcopy documents and 750 PC media (CD-ROMs and DVDs) per year, in response to requests from Member States. Provide yearly statistics of off-line services.
  • Provide support to the Nuclear Data Services Unit including production of the NDS Newsletters (two issues/year) and assist in all other data information-related initiatives.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to operate across organizational boundaries and the ability to establish and maintain partnerships and working relations are required.
  • Strong communication skills (spoken, written and presentational) are necessary.
  • Very good computer skills, covering standard office software, HTML for Web-page maintenance and SQL for database management. Ability to learn technical software applications for document compilation, management and digitization is required.
  • Knowledge of scientific databases such as EXFOR.
  • Ability to work independently with good time management and multi-tasking skills.
  • Willingness to learn new skills and take on new assignments as needed by the Nuclear Data Section.

Education, Experience and Language Skills

  • Completed secondary education.
  • Minimum of five years of relevant work experience in a clerical/administrative position, some of which in an international environment.
  • Experience of working in a scientific library desirable.
  • English language test (level 2) and typing test (level 2) to IAEA standard.
  • Language skills: Excellent command of written and spoken English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) an advantage.

Remuneration

The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at €39 880 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), six weeks' annual vacation, pension plan and health insurance.
