MI5 Forensic Speech & Language Specialist

£32,151 - £45,730 | London

MI5 keeps the UK safe by watching for and disrupting threats to our national security. Part of our work involves listening to legally intercepted audio material. Our Speech and Acoustics Analysis team uses forensic techniques, highly developed skills and sophisticated technology to determine the characteristics of languages and identities of individuals of interest in national security investigations. Whether working at the forefront of speech recognition software or drawing on expert audio and linguistic knowledge, our work is continually evolving and always challenging.

In the field of forensic linguistics, roles don't come much more important than this. At MI5, your manual forensic analysis of voice samples will help us verify the identity of particular languages and the individuals speaking them. To investigate threats to national security, we'll look to you to achieve what technology cannot.

Where possible, you'll use speaker identification software to help our audio analysts and intelligence officers to progress investigations and you'll be adding to the language database that improves our analytical ability. You'll be instrumental in helping to develop more effective models of language identification and phonetic search.

An exceptionally talented forensic linguist, you'll have knowledge of socio linguistics, corpus linguistics, accent profiling and voice comparison. Your understanding of the acoustics of speech and hearing is complemented by a highly developed knowledge of phonetics and phonology.

You'll need a degree or equivalent qualification in linguistics or languages and you may also have a Masters or PhD in Forensic Linguistics or Forensic Speech Science. What's certain is that you have the potential to take your already recognised expertise to a world-class level and you have a genuine interest in linguistics, language and speech processing technologies.

Join our team and we will support you in developing your personal, professional and technical skills at every opportunity.
