Trade economist , Singapore

Chemonics seeks a trade economist for a long-term position under a five-year, USAID-funded project to support US-Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). The project will support regional economic integration within APEC member states under APEC's three pillar framework of trade and investment liberalization, business facilitation, and economic and technical cooperation; and assist its work program to ultimately achieve the Bogor Goals of free and open trade and investment in the region. The project is anticipated to begin November 2013. We are looking for individuals who have a passion for making a difference in the lives of people around the world.

Responsibilities: 
  • Provide expert advice and guidance on the economics of current and future policies, strategies, and practices within APEC (including cost-benefit analysis, return of economic investment, and multiplier effect)
  • Devise methods and procedures for collecting and analyzing data, utilizing knowledge of available international data resources to undertake economic analysis of international trade effectiveness and logistics among APEC member states in support of its priority goals and activities
  • Carry out research in areas related to formulating recommendations, policies, and plans to aid in solutions to trade issues; strengthening global value chains; international monetary policies; or policies that regulate investment and transfer of capital
  • Organize meetings and consensus building to share knowledge and experience with member states, governments, and other multilateral institutions
Qualifications: 
  • Ph.D. or master's in economics, international trade, international business, or related subjects required
  • Minimum eight years of relevant experience in international trade economics
  • Experience and knowledge implementing and monitoring trade policy initiatives, regional and/or bilateral trade agreements and customs conventions  
  • Deep understanding and working knowledge of APEC, ASEAN, and/or other multilateral trade bodies
  • Experience in trade-related capacity building in developing countries, with particular reference to APEC and ASEAN member countries 
  • Experience supervising multidisciplinary staff including economic researchers and analysts
  • Demonstrated leadership, versatility, and integrity​​
  • Proficiency in English required; proficiency in other relevant languages desirable
