Researcher/Senior Researcher – Agricultural/Natural Resource Economics
The person and the job
If you have the skills and the passion to lead innovative research on the economics of agricultural and water resources development to influence policies and development outcomes in Central Asia, then you could be the person that the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) is looking for. The research will focus on Central Asia, but the position holder will also have the opportunity to contribute to IWMI’s research programs, globally. The position holder will be based at IWMI’s Regional Office for Central Asia and Caucasus, located in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and will report to the Leader of the Institute’s research theme on Water and Society.
You will:
- design and manage a research portfolio that would include performance analysis of agricultural economies in Central Asia and the Caucuses, considering agricultural water management, water-energy-food security nexus, economics of crop diversification, water pricing, and water resources institutions including water users’ associations (WUAs);
- provide leadership and strategic direction by contributing to interdisciplinary research projects involving hydrologists, agricultural water management researchers and environmental scientists in Central Asia;
- innovative research proposals to secure external funding;
- contribute to relevant research portfolios of the CGIAR Research Program on Water, Land and Ecosystems (WLE), with particular reference to economics of agriculture and water management issues in Central Asia.
- prepare research reports, journal articles, conference papers and other scientific manuscripts for the dissemination of research results;
- integrate research findings into effective policy recommendations, and disseminate information through relevant guidelines and policy briefs;
- facilitate and support the adoption of practical, science-based, policy solutions and decisions by national and international partners, authorities, governments and donors; and
- contribute to IWMI’s capacity building efforts in the areas of policy analysis and institution building.
You will possess:
- a PhD majoring in Agricultural Economics, Natural Resource Economics, Economics
- a minimum of five, and preferably more, years of research experience on water, agriculture or natural resource management in developing countries;
- strong evidence as a key contributor of international repute to one or more of the research areas associated with the position, as demonstrated by a strong publication record in peer-reviewed international journals, research impact and other acknowledgements;
- a clear understanding of development challenges, especially in relation to poverty alleviation and food security in Central Asia;
- good communication skills that enable you to explain international water management challenges and complex, interdisciplinary water issues in simple terms;
- strong client orientation and commitment to demand-driven research that supports decision making and delivery of outcomes;
- a demonstrable track record of managing teams to deliver high-quality outputs, which address these information needs, on time and according to budgets; and
- work experience in a Central Asian country, and knowledge of Russian or other local languages will be a distinct advantage.
This is an internationally recruited position with a competitive salary and benefits package, which includes a housing allowance, transport, education, shipping assistance, annual home leave, retirement and health insurance package. IWMI’s policy is to appoint staff initially on three-year contracts which are subject to renewal, depending on performance and the Institute’s needs.
