Intern and International Programs Director

World Hunger Relief, Inc. (WHRI) seeks a new Program Director to lead its intern and international programs.

WHRI is a 35-year-old, growing, Christian organization committed to the alleviation of hunger around the world.  Our mission includes one-year internships in agriculture missions and food systems, hunger education and advocacy, and international assistance through partnerships with local organizations.  Our 40-acre Texas facility operates as a working farm, generating produce for consumption and sale, which provides a real-world setting for training activities.  More information is available at: http://www.worldhungerrelief.org.

Position reports to:  Executive Director (ED)

Direct supervision of:  Training Manager (TM)

Status: full time, exempt

Major Accountabilities: 


The Intern/International Program Director (IIPD) will assure quality implementation of WHRI’s Agriculture Intern training program and International Programs.  He/she will supervise the TM who will carry out logistical tasks related to intern training.  The IIPD responsibilities are outlined in detail below.

Detailed Responsibilities and Outcomes

1.    International Programs
a.    Maintain relationships with international partners
i.    Haiti: World Hunger Relief – Haiti, FONJANEPS, GRADES
ii.    El Salvador: Directiva of Valle Nuevo, ADES
iii.    Liberia:  Ricks Institute
b.    Establish and maintainrelationships with other organizations to whom we can contribute assistance and from whom we can receive locations for intern training and employment
c.    Provide short-term agricultural consulting services
d.    Develop N. American church partnerships for support of international partner organizations
e.    Explore potential for leading meaningful short-term mission exposure trips for church partners
f.    Lead grant writing efforts for support of international programs
g.    Maintain International Partner pages on websites


2.    Intern Training
a.    Develop annual plan for the internship program
b.    Ensure that all lessons and field trips contribute to stated goals
c.    Design and teach classes as needed
d.    Evaluate progress of individual interns
e.    Assign mentoring duties and ensure that all staff fulfill their responsibilities
f.    Review intern applications and present to staff for decision-making
g.    Update library resources as needed
h.    Organize and facilitate monthly team-building activities
i.    Oversee Training Manager in the following:
i.    Actively recruit intern candidates
ii.    Maintain calendar of classes and events to fulfill curriculum goals
iii.    Arrange for WHRI staff to teach classes in their areas of expertise
iv.    Arrange for guest speakers and work with them on content
v.    Arrange field trips 
vi.    Assign host families and assure their healthy functioning
vii.    Identify and troubleshoot community life issues (accommodations, relationships, etc.)
viii.    Utilize volunteer or work-study labor keep library organized
ix.    Maintain internship webpage

3.    International Service Learning Internships (ISLI)
 (A 3 month learning opportunities provided to interns who finish WHRI’s training and wish for experience with one of our international partners.)
a.    Formalize procedures and communicate to all new WHRI interns
b.    Support ISLI candidates through preparation, fund raising, mobilization and re-entry
c.    Work with host commuities to prepare and regularly evaluate ISLI relationships

Challenges Of the Role: 
•    Need for multiple skills (language, technical, organizational, etc.)
•    Regular international travel (approximately 20% of time)

Impact of the Role on WHRI and Its Constituency: 
•    The IIPD’s leadership will assure the high-quality implementation of WHRI’s core missions of international outreach and intern training.
•    By maintaining significant international relationships, WHRI’s credibility as a training institution will be enhanced.
•    Through excellence in recruitment and training of interns, the IIPD will assure WHRI has a steady flow of high-quality individuals to run the central Texas training farm and educational programs.

Decision-Making and Level of Independence 
•    Authority to develop intern training curriculum in conversation with other staff
•    Full, within-budget decision-making authority for international program implementation

Position Interacts with: 
•    Regular interaction with Executive Director 
•    Direct supervision of Training Manager
•    Significant contact with church supporters and granting agencies
•    Regular contact with interns in classroom and hands-on training situations

Working Conditions 
WHRI functions as a supportive, cohesive community including staff, interns, and volunteers.  These multiple relationships provide both its richest rewards, and its greatest challenges.  WHRI is also a growing organization in the process of developing more structure and accountability to accommodate this growth.  In this context, leadership staff need to work doubly hard at communicating expectations and at being sensitive to the needs of individuals.

Knowledge, Capabilities And Experience:

•    Bachelor’s degree or higher
•    3-5 years international agriculture experience 
•    Excellent teaching and written communication skills
•    Spanish competency required
•    A team player and servant leader
