Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology is a business area within the Sandvik Group and a leading global supplier of equipment, tools, service, and technical solutions for the mining industry. The product offering covers rock drilling, rock cutting, rock crushing, loading and hauling and materials handling.
Key performance areas
As the Technical Specialist – Automation, you will be responsible for providing quality technical support in the US sales area both on mine sites and remotely. You will also participate in the commissioning of automation projects. The Technical Specialist will be required to follow defined commissioning timelines for projects and provide effective solutions to technical problems based on systemic failure analysis. This will involve capturing information from automation products and services, along with reporting and feedback to customers of the findings and recommendations to repair.
Technical Specialist Automation responsibilities include:
  • Provide technical training to the service network on proper operation, maintenance and troubleshooting practices
  • Provide technical support to end users, operators, and service personnel in cases of complex technical issues
  • Resolve and report any technical problems associated with product area offerings at the customer level
  • Provide technical and service support on all deliveries including retrofit kits of product area offerings.
  • Assist factories with field-testing and trials of new products and updated components to ensure proper and safe operation
  • Assist in the training of distributors
  • Provide on-site commissioning of Product Area offerings in the sales area and technical assistance to resolve issues
  • Review spare parts recommendations and develop accuracy of Machine Life Operating Costs (MLOC)
  • Coordinate with Sales Support in the relation to active quotations and sales and services cases
  • Investigates warranty claims proactively and reactively to enhance customer satisfaction and provide feedback to the respective factories
  • Liaise with third party suppliers in relation to technical deliveries of additional services
  • Liaise with Technical and Product Support teams
  • Assist customers with parts interpretations and recommended stock holdings
  • Comply with SMART safety policies and applicable government, customer or industry regulations or requirements.
This role will require extensive travel of up to 75%. This is a field-based position, location flexible, but preferably in Western US.
Your profile
The Technical Specialist – Automation must possess a two year Technical Degree in a mechanical discipline, along with 5 years of Technical experience and training in key aspects of technical trades. A 4 year Technical Degree with a focus on automation or electrical systems is preferred. Proven understanding and experience with machine CAN bus systems is required. You also possess proven understanding and experience with IT systems and terminology, MS Project, MS Visio, and MS Access, in addition to system support and remote support experience.

  • System support and remote support experience
  • Knowledge of customer’s industry
  • Systemic failure analysis
  • Experience in on site commissioning
  • Ability to work underground as needed
Experience with SQL, GPS, and WiFi systems would be a plus. The ability to travel is essential.
