Head of Policy and Advocacy - Maternity Cover International Rescue Committee

The IRC rescues and rebuilds people’s lives in more than 25 countries affected by conflict and natural disaster. Based in London, IRC-UK is the IRC’s European headquarters. Since its establishment in 1997, IRC-UK has grown rapidly and is now acknowledged for its high quality project management, technical expertise in governance and rights and economic recovery, and innovative thinking on early recovery and gender based violence.

The UK advocacy team works closely with IRC’s global team of advocates to establish and implement European-wide advocacy and policy.

We are looking for an experienced policy and advocacy professional to cover a maternity leave (starting in August) as IRC-UK’s Head of Policy and Advocacy. The position will involve managing a team of 2 full-time staff and additional interns to implement IRC-UK’s UK/European advocacy strategy on IRC’s priority countries and issues. The Head of Policy and Advocacy will also provide input into development and implementation of IRC-UK’s strategic plan, lead organization of policy events and report regularly to the Board.

Person Specification:

  • Masters degree in a subject related to IRC’s work (e.g. International Relations, Refugee or Migration Studies)
  • Excellent understanding of humanitarian aid and knowledge of relevant policy issues.
  • Considerable experience in the international not-for-profit sector. Extensive knowledge of current debates on humanitarian/conflict issues and relevant institutions, including key donors and UN.
  • Experience of working in conflict/post conflict development or humanitarian relief or related field.
  • At least 3 years experience of preparation and delivery of policy positions and targeted advocacy strategies with clear results.
  • Knowledge of the UK aid policy environment; experience of working with or advocating to DfiD.
  • Experience in research and drafting for advocacy and for publication.
  • Excellent ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing; strong presentation skills
  • Strong networking skills
  • Ability to work in close collaboration with team members and remote field offices
  • Good analytical skills, and first-class attention to detail.
