 Hours:                  Monday-Thursday 9am – 1pm; 
 Background:
 Since its inception in 1999, the  Refugee Youth Program has developed partnerships with New York City  public schools, community-based organizations and local colleges and  universities to support the positive development of refugee youth and  their communities in New York City. The Refugee Youth Program provides  year round programming working directly with refugee youth, their  parents and families, and their schools.
 Scope of Work:
 The Refugee Youth Summer Academy is a  six-week program focusing on English literacy and math skills newly  arrived refugee youth need to succeed at their grade level in the New  York City public system. In the morning students participate in academic  classes while afternoon sessions are reserved for creative arts and  recreational activities including sports, arts and crafts, theatre,  music and dance. Field Trips are held on Fridays.
 At the lower and upper elementary  grade levels (K-2 and 3-5) the Lead Academic Teachers will guide a  self-contained classroom by teaching and engaging students with  culturally and age appropriate lesson plans. At the Junior High and High  School levels Lead Academic Teachers will be responsible for  specialized content instruction in one of three specific subjects:  English Language Arts, Math, and Humanities
 The Lead Academic Teachers are  expected to design an English Language Learner focused curriculum that  includes literacy, math and humanities lessons. Given the varied formal  education experiences of the refugee youth, the lead teacher must also  include differentiated instructions for the class of approximately 15  students of mixed age and academic level. This curriculum will include  adaptation of a 2 Week Welcome to Our School curriculum created  by the New York State Office of Refugee and Immigration Services, which  is designed to orient newly arrived refugee students to U.S.  schools. Throughout their classroom activities, teachers will be  expected to contribute to the Program’s goals of fostering community  building among the students and staff. Candidates should specify  which class level they are applying for: K-2nd, 3rd-5th,  6th-8th or High School.* If applying for a  Junior High or High School position, please indicate if your  training/experience has been in English, Math or Humanities. 
 Essential Job Function:
 - Participate in the All-Staff orientation/training on June 28th and June 29th and all program meetings and staff development activities, thereafter.
 - With input from the Refugee Youth Program Education Services Officer, plan and develop a 6 week culturally and age appropriate literacy and/or math curriculum using student centered teaching methodologies for English Language Learners at the K-2nd, 3rd-5th, 6th-8th or High School level.
 - Plan, adapt and implement the 2 Week Refugee Academy using the Welcome to Our Schools curriculum.
 - Submit curriculum outline to the Education Services Officer prior to the start of the program and submit weekly lesson plans.
 - Regularly review student progress and maintain portfolio folders with weekly submission of work.
 - Complete all required reporting on time. Comply with all agency policies and protocols.
 - Productively incorporate assistant teacher intern and volunteers into classroom instruction.
 - Participate in two parent/teacher conferences throughout summer school and complete final ‘report cards’ for each student.
 
Requirements:
 ·          Master’s degree in  education or related field required.
 ·          New York State teaching  certification required.
 ·          A minimum of three years  teaching in the New York City Department of Education required.
 ·          Ability to develop  creative and engaging literacy and math lessons for beginner to  intermediate ELLs
 ·          Cross-cultural or  overseas experience required.
 ·          Experience working with  refugee and/or immigrant populations desirable.
 ·          Ability to work  independently and as part of a team.
 ·          Second Language  proficiency in French, Tibetan, Nepali or Arabic desirable.
