Job Purpose

Develop and deliver innovative research for use by Oxfam International (OI) and Oxfam affiliates worldwide on the subject of ‘more and better aid’ to fuel proactive advocacy and media work that will counter anti-aid rhetoric and respond to new trends in the debates on aid and development finance. Making the most of a Brussels-based location, this role will deliver research pertinent to these debates at a European level, but will also reach out to colleagues in the US, Canada, Japan and beyond to ensure we tailor our new research to the power analysis on more and better aid.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop a clear research strategy which identifies the key issues and products Oxfam will need to make the case for more and better aid and development finance over the coming years, within the context of Oxfam’s existing body of research and public and programme policy.
  • Deliver at least 2 high quality research products each year, and the associated promotion of these products to influential audiences, ideally linked to key moments in international debates or policy processes.
  • Provide research and analytical support campaign and media colleagues in developing innovative advocacy, campaign and media products, and provide strategic input to these products,.
  • Conduct ad hoc shorter pieces of research to support other policy/research products being developed by Oxfam.
  • Where necessary, lead on commissioning research from external researchers / consultants.
  • Support Oxfam’s national and regional offices and partner organisations where appropriate to develop complimentary research, advocacy and media products. Including acting as a first point of contact on learning and capacity building on research.
  • Build and expand Oxfam’s relationships with key researchers and experts on these issues in academia, NGO and government sectors.

Key Competencies

  • A post-graduate degree in international development or related field of study (Essential)
  • A proven record of research and analysis on aid, aid effectiveness and development finance (E).
  • Experience of developing research for advocacy, media and campaigns use. (E) Written publication record (Desirable).
  • Ability to think strategically, achieve results and good project management skills (E)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to motivate, influence and negotiate both internally and externally (E)
  • Strong interpersonal skills including good team work, and experience in working in multi-cultural and virtual teams (E)
  • Ability to work autonomously with minimal day-to-day management. (E)
  • Ability to travel, up to 6 weeks per year (E)
  • Commitment to the aim of Oxfam, to end poverty and suffering. (E)
  • Commitment to Oxfam’s humanitarian principles and action and commitment to

  • Computer literate, and fluency in English. (E)
