Director of Development, America Abroad Media - Washington, DC

America Abroad Media (AAM) seeks a Director of Development to play a critical role in the organization's growth by spearheading and overseeing all efforts related to fundraising and development.

Reporting to and in partnership with AAM’s President, the Director of Development will manage the development team and be responsible for:

  • Devising and overseeing the implementation of AAM’s annual fundraising strategy to secure financial support from individuals, foundations, corporations and governments.
  • Developing and overseeing the process of identifying new funding sources;
  • Overseeing the grant-writing process – managing and coordinating interaction between the development, programming and financial teams to ensure timely and professional completion of proposals;
  • Helping to lead the conceptualization and crafting of new program ideas;
  • Liaising with programming departments and the CFO to help ensure the development of production timelines, budgets and disbursement plans for grant awards, and the timely delivery of all project deliverables;
  • Managing the Donor Pro contact database and overseeing staff responsible for data entry and gift processing;
  • Overseeing the performance and financial reporting for all existing grants; and
  • Overseeing the use of social media tools to engage donors.

This is a full time, exempt position, and salary will be commensurate with experience. Qualifications


The candidate should be very detail-oriented and extremely organized, and have the ability to manage and prioritize multiple solicitations and tasks simultaneously. AAM seeks an individual with the following qualifications:

  • Master’s degree;
  • At least 5 years experience in nonprofit development, with 1-3 years as director of development or similar role;
  • A strong background in and proven understanding of international affairs;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills (including a proven track record in proposal writing);
  • Experience using social media for development purposes;
  • Demonstrated ability to work in teams and significantly contribute to a mission-based organization;
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a team and work across departments to complete projects; and
  • Interest and experience in media and journalism.
