The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance — International IDEA is an intergovernmental organization that supports sustainable democracy worldwide. Its objective is to strengthen democratic institutions and processes. International IDEA acts as a catalyst for democracy building by providing knowledge resources, policy proposals and supporting democratic reforms in response to specific national requests. It works together with policy makers, governments, UN organizations and agencies and regional organizations engaged in the field of democracy building.

International IDEA’s notable areas of expertise are: electoral processes, political parties, constitution-building processes, democracy and gender and democracy assessments. International IDEA works worldwide. It is based in Stockholm, Sweden, and has offices in Brussels, New York, Latin America, Africa and Asia.

Main functions of the post:

  • Develop the voice for all aspects of CBP's online presence
  • Coordinate, create and manage content for ConstitutionNet (in various languages) and its future social media platforms
  • Develop and maintain a dynamic community of practice that facilitates knowledge exchange and experience among those involved in constitution building processes
  • Be the link between the technical side and graphical design of the ConstitutionNet, and the other team members of the CBP team (at global programme and regional and country levels), as well as IDEA's communications team.

Context

IDEA's constitution building programme is entering a new phase where the ConstitutionNet will be developed further and take a new format. The vision is to (1) transform ConstitutionNet into the leading interactive online resource center in constitution building in the next 5–7 years and (2) be the main window for IDEA's work at the Global Programmes, regional and Country level offices in the area of constitution building. The web editor will be a key position in this work.

Duties and Responsibilities: General, Programme, Managerial and Administrative, as applicable

Under the direction and supervision of the CBP team Manager, the incumbent performs the following duties:

Content Development

  • Assists the CBP team in developing and implementing a web strategy for the future ConstitutionNet;
  • Coordinates and provides the latest news and informed views and analyses and pending constitution building processes across the world in real time and make them available on ConstitutionNet;
  • Creates, develops and manages content for ConstitutionNet, including video;
  • Copyedits and proofreads all web content;
  • Coordinates content in the different language versions, Arabic, French and Spanish;
  • Maintains and updates ConstitutionNet's knowledge base, comprising the most relevant and up-to-date primary and secondary materials, drawing on content in languages other than English

Online Outreach and Promotion

  • Drives interactive online dialogues on ‘hot topics’ in constitution building processes;
  • Provides links and spurs discussions through social media and mobile platforms;
  • Develops and implements strategies and systems to increase ConstitutionNet's visibility for members of the CBP community of practice network as well as the general public, by providing, for example, a daily or weekly email alert service.

Technical and graphical coordination

  • Coordinates and works closely with technical IT/webmaster staff (outsourced) to ensure that ConstitutionNet provides a rich online experience for all users;
  • With the help of graphic designers, maintains a consistent look and feel throughout all web properties, under the corporate IDEA branding, in close collaboration with IDEA's Communications team

Qualifications and skills

Level and type of formal education

University degree in communication and/or journalism or other relevant discipline.

Professional experience

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience as a communications/web editor
  • Experience of developing and maintaining online communities of practice
  • Experience using social media in a professional context
  • Experience of working in the field of constitution building/democracy related and / or organizations/or international/non-profit organizations would be an advantage
  • Extensive knowledge of web content systems

Functional competencies

  • Proven analytical and problem solving skills;
  • Good organizational skills and high level of efficiency;
  • Ability to work independently and under pressure;
  • Ability and capacity to work effectively as part of a team and to adapt to a multi-cultural environment.

Computer Skills

  • Strong experience in all major computer programmes and in developing websites and social media.

Language skills

  • English: Excellent
  • Other: Arabic, Spanish and/or French would be an asset.

Terms of Contract:

Two (2) Year Fixed Term Appointment.
