Senior Researcher/Researcher on peace operations

SIPRI is seeking a Senior Researcher or Researcher to join its Armed Conflict and Conflict Management Programme, taking particular responsibility for peace operations.

Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) is an independent international institute for research into problems of peace and conflict, especially those of international security, armaments and disarmament. It ranks as one of the world’s foremost research organizations focusing on these issues.

The Armed Conflict and Conflict Management Programme provides the main platform within SIPRI for critical research, analysis and recommendations in relation to the nature, major actors, and overall trends in conflict and armed violence. As a part of its work on conflict, the Programme has established a strong reputation in the study of peace operations and post conflict peacebuilding activities.

In 2012 SIPRI launched a new initiative, The New Geopolitics of Peacekeeping, to examine the impact of the changing international security environment on the nature, location, scale and aims of peace operations with a focus on the perspectives and policies of emerging powers. Through a series of regional dialogue meetings, the initiative aims to explore the shifting normative and practical landscape related to the use of force to manage conflict.

The Programme develops and hosts the SIPRI Multilateral Peace Operations Database (http://www.sipri.org/databases/pko/), a unique source of information on various peace operations around the globe.

SIPRI is committed to strengthening its work related to peace operations. The person appointed to this position will be expected to play a major role in developing and managing an expanding range of activities in this area, including the New Geopolitics of Peacekeeping initiative.

The major responsibilities of the Senior Researcher/Researcher will include:

  • Taking the lead, in coordination with the Programme Director, in developing a research agenda and set of activities (projects, meetings, publications) to explore the key issues and challenges of contemporary peace operations and peace building and to strengthen the international profile and reputation of the Programme;

  • Bringing forward initiatives and project funding proposals to support the Programme’s existing initiatives and new activities;

  • Managing staff involved with peace operations work in the Programme;

  • Promoting work on peace operations across the institute, including through advancing initiatives to establish new expertise at SIPRI and secure the resources to support new posts related to peace operations issues;

  • Producing on a regular basis high-quality publications of international significance;

  • Managing the Peace Operations database;

  • Representing the Programme in meetings, conference, seminars and other relevant forums;

  • Strengthening existing contact networks with policymakers and experts and build new ones;

  • Responding to media and public queries.

The successful candidate will have:

  • A minimum level of experience (five years for a Senior Researcher and three years for a Researcher) in academic research or policy work related to peace operations, including a record of high-quality (peer-reviewed) publications;

  • An advanced academic qualification (a PhD is preferred) in international relations, peace and conflict studies, political science, or related social science discipline;

  • A track record of successful fund raising to support research;

  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team in an international environment;
