Financial Sector Expert/Senior Financial Sector Expert (MCMGA)

The Monetary and Capital Markets department of the International Monetary Fund has an opening for a Financial Sector Expert to work as a European Bank Analyst in its Global Markets Analysis (GA) division.
The key functions of the GA division include the on-going monitoring and assessing of developments in global financial markets and systemically important financial institutions, analyzing risks to global financial stability and helping to ensure that the Fund takes consistent and well-informed views about financial risks and policies to mitigate these risks.
The main responsibilities of the Financial Sector Expert will include:
  • Ongoing monitoring and analysis of European financial institutions, whose activities are likely to have significant impact on financial stability at the regional or global level;
  • In-depth assessment of risks and vulnerabilities of major European banks, including their linkages with other financial institutions and markets (using both balance sheet and market data; stress-testing or other analytical tools); and
  • Periodic assessment of longer-term structural changes in the European banking industry (and broader financial sector) and their potential implications for financial stability.
In addition, the Financial Sector Expert will be expected to:
  • Contribute to the analysis presented in the Global Financial Stability Report (GFSR), including by taking substantial role in drafting sections of Chapter 1 of the GFSR;
  • Play significant role in interdepartmental fora to present departmental views on market and banking sector developments and forward-looking risks; and
  • Participate in market surveillance missions to key financial centers and maintain constant dialogue with financial market participants in order to gauge emerging risks related to the activities of major European banks.

Qualifications

Requirements for this position include the following:
  • An advanced degree in economics, finance, business administration, or a related field;
  • Additional software/skills
  • A strong background in financial institutions (bank) analysis, knowledge of risk management techniques, and a sound understanding of the ongoing regulatory reforms affecting European financial institutions;
  • An established track record of 5 to 10 years in the financial industry, a central bank, or research experience, or other related experience;
  • Strong quantitative skills and ideally, proficiency in some aspects of financial modeling;
  • A proven ability to interpret and analyze complex issues under pressure, both independently and in teams, and to provide concise and insightful analysis in written and verbal form; and
  • The ability to cultivate and maintain relationships with financial market participants and market groups at other multilateral institutions.
The vacancy is for a contractual position for an initial period of 2 years, with the possibility of an extension, dependant on performance.
