Director, Research Utilization in Washington, D.C. or Durham, N.C

We seek qualified candidates for the position of Director, Research Utilization in Washington, D.C. or Durham, N.C.

Position Description:

The Director, Research Utilization will be responsible for leading and coordinating efforts across two key areas. The first element consists of linking scientific and technical experts to generate knowledge in support of favorable policy environments and programmatic solutions to key health and development challenges. The second component focuses on the translation of new and existing evidence into effective policies and programs. The incumbent should possess a high level of technical and management expertise and substantial experience in supporting program- and policy-linked research and the subsequent application and uptake of evidence to inform policies and programs.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Develops and provides leadership, as well as personnel and budget oversight, in support of department and organizational strategic plan, mission, goals and objectives.
  • Actively seeks out funding opportunities for unit, participates in the development of proposals, leads proposal development teams, and ensures that coverage for research utilization talent is embedded/integrated into relevant awards.
  • Develops and monitors unit work plans and budgets, working closely with department director and deputy director.
  • Contributes to FHI 360’s efforts to build and sustain capacity in core topic areas, including evidence-based programming, evidence-based policy formulation, scale-up of evidence-informed programs and services.
  • Provides technical assistance and contributions through the review and/or writing of research utilization-related frameworks, strategies, tools, proposals, papers, reports and ensures their accuracy and appropriateness.
  • Develops, implements, and monitors a proactive strategy to integrate evidence-based programming into FHI 360 sector and geographic portfolios.
  • Collaborates with leadership to ensure research is developed, implemented and disseminated in a way that increases the potential of research use.
  • Represents FHI 360 at relevant meetings and with funders such as USAID, NIH, CDC as well as private foundations, international organizations, and implementing agencies.
  • Ensures coordination with other FHI 360 units, departments and groups to foster collaboration, innovative approaches and technical excellence.

.Minimal Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience in leading organizational units and/or project teams.
  • Proven skills in resource development including identifying opportunities and leading or participating in the proposal development process.
  • Expertise in related core topic areas (research utilization theories, frameworks and strategies; evidence-based programming; evidence-based policy formulation; and scale-up of evidence-informed programs and services).
  • Demonstrated experience in domestic and/or international public health and knowledge of other development sectors.
  • Substantial experience planning and implementing programs in resource-limited countries.
  • Excellent English written and verbal communication skills.
  • Personnel management and grantsmanship experience.
  • Ability to travel nationally and internationally as needed, including travel to resource-limited countries.

MS/MA in relevant field and 13-15 years of relevant experience that includes 9-11 years of supervisory experience; or PhD in relevant field and 11-13 years of relevant experience that includes 9-11 years of supervisory experience.
