Fisheries or resource economist Indonesia

Chemonics seeks a short-term fisheries or resource economist for the USAID-funded Indonesia Marine and Climate Support project. The economist will work with a team supporting the Indonesian government, specifically the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF), in defining the scope, objectives, and technical underpinnings of the "blue economy" initiative and metrics to evaluate progress. We are looking for individuals who have a passion for making a difference in the lives of people around the world.

Responsibilities include:

  • Research elements and applicability of existing international blue economy initiatives for Indonesia
  • Work closely with the MMAF and local economists to define major components and objectives for the Indonesia blue economy initiative
  • Identify the most influential components, leading to definition of quantitative, feasible blue economy indicators and/or metrics
  • Work closely with local specialists to understand the current status and any challenges associated with ongoing data collection, quality assurance, and analysis
  • Establish a strategy and approach, with initial roles and responsibilities, to monitor the blue economy indicators annually and measure progress toward targets
  • Develop a long-term strategy focused on continually improving Indonesia's performance against blue economy indicators/metrics
  • Define and develop a plan for any further economic analysis needed to support blue economy elements and the monitoring and evaluation approach
Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree in fisheries economics, resource economics, or related discipline required
  • Minimum 15 years of relevant professional experience
  • Minimum 10 years of experience working in a developing country context
  • Ability to work with international teams and produce high-caliber technical analyses that incorporate international best practice
  • Demonstrated leadership, versatility, and integrity ​
  • English fluency required
