MEDIA SPECIALIST, PUBLIC POLICY - 13006

World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the world's leading conservation organization, seeks a Media Specialist who develops, executes and monitors public relations and external affairs strategies across various channels for WWF's key programs, helping support specific program objectives and wider institutional branding needs. Performs both proactive and reactive public relations activities and supports Media & External Affairs colleagues in crisis communications and cross-cutting issues.

Major Duties & Responsibilities
1.Develops, implements and updates public relations plans and strategies for achieving program objectives. Brings media stories from conception to placement through audience identification, message development, pitch strategy, timetable and execution. Writes press releases, media advisories and other media materials; initiates, coordinates and follows up on press conferences, media briefings, institutional statements and special interviews; responds to media requests for information and interviews with WWF staff; arranges and facilitates phone and in-person and/or on-camera interviews.
2.Seeks out story ideas from program staff at headquarters and in program offices throughout the network.
3.Manages and oversees media coverage of WWF's programs, stays abreast of news and events related to conservation issues around the world, and identifies risks and maximizes pro-active and reactive communications opportunities for advancing WWF programs to various audiences, and through various channels.
4.Maintains on-going relationships with a wide range of journalists working in the environmental/scientific popular press, major newspapers, TV and radio producers, correspondents and other journalists. Responsible for advancing these relationships to maximize WWF coverage using traditional and digital public relations strategies and tactics.
5.Represents WWF-US at appropriate national and international meetings on behalf of the programs. Reports on the progress of these meetings to relevant staff and follows up on action. Travels to program sites around the world as needed to support top-level media opportunities.
6.Performs other duties as assigned.

Working Relationships
Internal: Interacts daily with other team members in Media & External Affairs. Also interacts regularly with Program Communications team members and other members of the marketing/communications units. Keeps in constant contact with program staff throughout WWF-US headquarters and in relevant offices of the WWF network.

External: Regular contact with journalists throughout the world, with a focus on reporters for US media outlets. Interacts with agencies and research organizations, partner organizations and consultants as necessary.

Qualifications


Minimum Requirements
Education/Experience: A Bachelor's degree or related experience is required, preferably with a concentration in communications or related discipline. Minimum four (4) years work experience in the field of public relations, media relations, communications, journalism, and/or related field. Proven experience successfully developing and/or placing stories in high-level media outlets, building relationships with reporters, and using digital public relations strategies and tactics. Knowledge of WWF, its global programs, and environmental and policy issues a plus.

Skills and Abilities:
•Superb written and oral communications skills
•Existing relationships with top-level journalists
•Working knowledge of and enthusiasm for conservation and sustainability issues. Strong interpersonal communication skills, especially relationship management skills and the ability to work diplomatically as part of a high-level, multidimensional, international team
•Social media skills preferred; experience creating social media strategies a plus
•Negotiation and facilitation skills; ability to execute and move projects though multi-level approval structures
•Able to effectively prioritize, coordinate several projects at one time, and work accurately under time constraints and tight deadlines
•Ability to travel both nationally and internationally (about 1 - 2 trips/year)
•Foreign language skills are desirable
